Season five of Murdoch Mysteries opens in unfami liar ter ritory, as Detective William Murdoch (Ya nnick Bisson) leaves Toronto to try his luck while the Klondike Gold Rush in the Yukon w inds down . Suspe nded for interfering in an in vestigation, on the run for surreptit iously freeing a murderer to make amends, an d nursing a broken hear t after Dr. Ogden's marriage to another man, he tries to escape hi s past , and his passion for detec tive work . Back in the city, newly promoted Chief Constable Giles (Nigel Bennett) m akes it clea r to Inspector Thomas Brackenreid (Thomas Craig), that he'll be keeping a very cl ose eye on police matters. Meanwhile, Murdoch 's beloved former associate, D r. Julia Ogden (Hélè ne Joy), is now working alongside Acting Detective George C rabtree (Jonny H arris ) and Dr. Em ily Grace (Georgina Reilly), a feisty young protégé. In th e remo te north, Murdoc h is ple ased to discover that his fledgling prospecting career m ay garner grea t success, a small comf ort a fter Jul ia's marriage to anothe r man. But as h e tries to rebuild his life, he finds hi msel f drawn into the ca se of Mrs. E lizabeth Bry ant (Jill Half penny) , an i nnkeeper charged with murder. The plot thickens when writer J ack London (Aaron Ash more) lends his insights, and Mur doch soon re alizes that while he had hoped to leave his shattered heart and tattered c areer bac k in Toronto , hi s days as a detect ive are not behind him.
