Now on psychiatric leave from the San Francisco Poli ce Department and work ing as a freel ance detective consu ltant on difficult cases , Mo nk hopes to convince his forme r boss, Captain Lela nd Stottle meyer (Te d Levin e), to allow him to retur n to the force. Stot tlemeyer, who wavered between a dmiration for Monk and annoy ance at his eccentricities during th e first season, i s becoming m ore of a frie nd to Monk as the serie s de velops, frequently calling him in to help, as much for Monk's benefi t as fo r his own. H owever, he knows Monk's limitations as well as his str engths and may stil l harbor doubts a bout the wi sdom of allowing Monk to carry a gun or subdue a perpetrator. Stottlemeyer's second-i n-command, Li eutenan t Randall Disher (Ja son Gray- Stanf ord), also seems to be deve loping both admiration and compas sion for the ma n he once labeled the defect ive det ective.Despite flaws a nd inadequa cies all ar ound, the three are bec oming an i ncreasingly effec tive te am, wi th addit ional help from Mon k's personal assi stant. From the double-ep isode pilot through the first half of season three, Monk was aided by his nu rse, Sharo na Fleming ( Bitty Schram). B ut in the tenth ep isode of the third se ason, Sharona was replaced by a new assist ant, Natalie Teeger (Traylor Howard). L ike Sharona, a divorcee with a son named Benjy, Natalie is a s ingle pa rent, a widow with a daughter named Julie (Emmy Cl arke).
