Former police detecti ve Adrian Mo nk (Tony S halhoub), whose photographic memory and amazing abi lity to pie ce together tiny clues mad e him a local l egend, has su ffered from intensifie d obsessive- compulsi ve di sorder and a varie ty of phobias since the unsol ved murder of his w ife, Trudy, in 1997. Now on psychiatric leave from t he San Franc isco Police Depar tment and working as a freelance detective consultant on difficult cases, Monk hopes to con vince his former boss, Captain Le land Stottlemeyer (T ed Levine), to all ow him to return to the force. St ottlemeyer , who wavered b etween admir atio n for Monk and annoy ance at his eccentricities during the first s eason, is becoming more of a f riend to Monk as the series d evelops, fre quently cal ling h im in to help, as much for M onk's benefit as for his own. However , he knows Monk's limitations as well as his str engths an d may sti ll harbor doubts a bout the wisdom of allowing Monk to carry a gun or subdue a perpetrator. S tottleme yer's second -in-command, Lieutenant Ra ndall Di sher (Jason Gray-Stanfor d), also seems to be developing both admiration a nd compassion for the man he on ce labeled th e defective detective.Despite flaws and i nadequacies all around, the three ar e becomin g an increasingly effective team, with additional help from Monk's pers onal assist ant. From the double-episode pil ot th rough the first half of season thre e, Monk was aided by his nurse, Sharona Fle ming ( Bitty Schram). But in t he tenth episode of the third season, Sharona was replaced by a new assist ant, Natalie Teeger (Traylor How ard). Like Sharona, a divor cee with a son named Benjy, Natal ie is a single p arent, a widow with a daug hter named Juli e (E mmy Clarke).
