Deputy A ssistant Commissioner Charlie Hilli an is killed on the n ight of hi s retirem ent party. Hilli an was at o ne time a sen ior off icer in Oxford and was in fact Morse's boss . He was als o writing a book about his most memorable cases, i ncluding one about the unsolved death of an 8-year-old girl so me 18 years ago. The suspec t in that case, Frederick Redpath, was at Hill ian's house the d ay he died and that chapte r from the manuscript is missing. There are other s uspects howe ver, including H illian's gh ost writer who will no w recei ve all of the book's royalties; a han dyman w ho was wor king on the property; and Redpath's da ughter, who kne w the little girl who was killed a ll those yea rs before.
