A shok's e xtended family includes his wife Radha (Shabana Azmi), his brother Jatin (Javed Ja ffrey), their ailing mo ther Biji (Kusha l Re khi) and their mans ervant Mundu (Ranjit Ch owdhry) , all living under the same roof. Jati n, at the insistence of Ashok and their m other, Biji, agrees to marry the beau tiful Sita (Nandita Das ) in an arranged marriage, altho ugh he is actually in love with Julie (Alice Poon ), a Chinese -Indian. At first g lance, you see a happy middl e-class fami ly go ing throug h the normal paces of everyday l ife. However, a s the lay ers are slowly p eeled back, we fin d a sim mering c auldr on of discon tent within the family, with almost every family membe r liv ing a lie. Both m arriages i n the family turn out to be e motionally em pty, wi thout love o r passi on. While Asho k is an a scetic who has taken a vow of celibacy, Jatin is a ha ndsome ladies' m an who is sti ll ope nly see ing Julie even after his marriage to Sita. Ashok h as pledge d his total devotion to a religi ous holy man, a swami, in order to purge hi s life of worl dly desires and temptations. Radha, bound b y her sens e of duty t o her husband, agree s to go along w ith his wishes. As you can imagi ne, with both husbands ignorin g the ir spouses' emotional and s exua l needs (albeit with reasons that are totally oppo site from each other), it is only a m atter of ti me before R adha a nd Sita look to one another for comfort and to sat isfy their own passio ns. In this environment, it is only natural that S ita and Radh a become fast friends, and, in ti me, much more than that.
