This early 7 0's giallo b y Umbert o Lenzi is c ertainly among the best in hi s filmography and also in the w hole genre. Personall y I think Lenzi's b est fi lms a re the funny cartoo n-turne d-film Kriminal, the st ylish giallo Seven Blood- Stained Orchids , the exp losive Napoli violenta and this. In the eightie s he did plent y of film trash i n form of Eaten Alive, H itcher in the Dark or Black Demons , all of whi ch are ri pping somethin g off and or very dull and slow moving. Knif e of Ice came when the giallo boo m was a t its hottes t and the result is convincing. Technically the film is superb , containin g great cinematography in the begi nning when we learn about th e main character's tr auma towards trains. From this poin t on , Len zi shows us his abili ty to benefit the w idescreen and, for example , th e bicycle ride near the fo rest i s genui nely beautiful! This sc ene also shows Lenzi's ability to build suspense, very slowly but me aningfully. After all, ther e aren' t so many mu rders in the wh ole film, only the suspense c irculating arou nd the murderer's identit y. One susp ect is a devil worsh ipper which brings new aspects to the mys tery. Since the final scene takes p lace i n a church, one can wonder i f Lenzi wanted to comment on som ething, maybe the hypocr itical morale o f church an d superstition. The main character (Carrol Baker) is mute whic h demands a lot from her fac e and eyes. The actress works very w ell, giv ing us a believable per formance circulating around the em otions of fear and mental pain. The other actors are goo d, too. The finally, however, may not g ive too positive a sight about femal e sex si nce they all are expr essed rather neg atively in t he film, one way or another.
