This early 70's giallo by Umberto Lenzi is certai nly among the best in his filmography an d also i n the who le genre. Personally I think Lenzi 's best fi lms are the funny cartoon-turned- film Kri minal, the stylish giallo S even Blood-Stained Orchids, the explosive Napo li violenta and this . In the eighties he did plent y of film trash in form of Eaten Alive, Hitcher in the Dark or Black Demons, all of whic h are rip ping something of f an dor very dull and slow mov ing. Knife of Ice came when the giallo boom was at it s hotte st an d the re sult is convincin g. Technicall y the film is superb, containing g reat cinem atogra phy i n th e beginning when we learn about the main character's tr auma t owards train s. From this point on, Lenzi shows us his a bility to benefit th e wides creen an d, for ex ample, t he bic ycle ride near the forest is ge nuinely beau tiful! This scene also shows Lenzi' s ability t o build suspense, very slowly but mea ningfully. After al l, there ar en't so many murders in the w hole film, only the suspen se circul ating around th e murderer's identity. One suspect is a devil wo rshipper which brings new aspects to the mystery . Since t he fin al s cene tak es place in a church, one can wonde r if Lenzi wanted to comment on something, maybe the hypoc ritical m orale of church and superst ition. The main char acter (Carrol Baker) is mute which demands a lot from her face and eyes . The actre ss wor ks very well, givi ng us a beli evabl e performance circulating aroun d the emotions of fear an d mental pai n. The other a ctors are good, too. T he fin ally, however, may not g ive too positive a sight about female sex since they a ll are express ed rather negatively in the film, one wa y or ano ther. Stil l this is easily amo ng t he most not eworthy in the genre, not a s bl oody as the Argen to films, fo r example, but equally sus penseful and visually also interes
