Marg Duff ield (Lee Remick) is the Maine wife of Al (Joseph Sommer) wh ose d aughter Peg (Marle e Ma tlin) is de af. Peg's h usband is killed in a car acci dent on the way to vis it the Maine house, and the Duffield's take in Pe g's six year old daughte r, L isa, while Peg recovers. Sinc e Lisa is a speakin g child, Marg th inks of her the way she w anted Peg to be, and seeks guardian custody. R emick's role is secon dary to Matlin's , though sh e is presented as a tragic figure, particularly a s Al ref uses t o help her plan to gain Lisa. Peg's deafn ess is sa id to be from a chil dhood case of spinal m eningitis, a nd the tel eplay by Lo uisa Burns-Bisogno, with story by Louisa and Tom Bisogno, redu ces Remic k to a te xtbook mothe r who is self-hating from guilt and therefore cannot love her own daughter. In a mem orable scene, Peg a ngrily signs her exit to Mar g, since Marg has refused to learn sign l anguage, thoug h Peg h as lear ned to speak for her moth er. The treatment u ses the Ten nesee Williams play, The Glass Menager ie, for ther apy, to help Peg overc ome her grief and also Marg `lose her u nicorn horn' and embrace her daughter. Whilst Peg choosing to act in this play may seem an odd choice for someone grieving, what is mor e noticable is th at Matlin is far too more glamourous to be believa ble as Laura . The Bisogno's include Michael O'Keefe as D an, Peg's deceased husband's best friend and director of Actor s Theatre f or the Deaf, to offer P eg a new r omantic interest, and thankfully she rebuk es his protest ations of love. Although his opinion m ay be influenced by his `crush', Dan tells Pe g that being differ ent is better than being normal, since the normal ones are as `co mmon as weeds'. This p hilosophy reads as rather Nietzsch ean, on the level of artists not bein g restr icted to the common moral code. Director Karen Arth ur e ither has those signing also speaking or those sig ning being transl ated for the audien ce, though in one scene the sound of lappin g waves drowns out the dialogue betw een Dan and Peg .
