Marg Duff ield (Lee Remick) is the Maine wife o f Al (Joseph Sommer) whose d aughter Peg (Marlee Matlin) i s deaf. Peg 's husband is ki lled in a car ac cident on the way to visit the Maine house, and t he Duffield' s take in Peg's six year o ld daughter , Li sa, while Peg recovers. Since Lisa is a speaki ng child, Marg thinks of her the way she wanted Peg to be, and seeks guardian custo dy. Remic k's role is secondary to Ma tlin's, though she i s presented as a t ragic figure, p articularl y as Al refu ses to help her plan to ga in Lisa. Peg 's deafness is said to be from a chil dhood case of spinal meningitis, and the te leplay by Louis a Burns-Bi sogno, with story by Louisa and Tom Bisogno, redu ces R emic k to a textbook mother who is se lf-ha ting from guilt and therefore cannot love her own daughter. In a memorable s cene, Peg angrily s igns her exit to Marg, s ince Marg ha s refused to lear n sig n langua ge, thoug h Peg has learned to speak for h er mother. The treatment uses the Tennesee Will iams play, T he G lass Menagerie, for therapy, to help Peg overcome her grief an d also Marg `lo se her uni corn horn' and embrace her daughter. Whi lst Peg cho osing to act in this pl ay may seem an od d choice for someone grieving , what is more noticable is that Matlin is far to o more glamourous to be believable as Laura. The Biso gno's include Mich ael O'K eefe as Dan, Peg's d eceas ed husband's best f riend and direct or of Actors Theatre for the Deaf, to of fer Peg a ne w romantic interest, and thankfully she rebuke s his protestations of lo ve. Although his opinion may be influ enced by his `crush', Da n tells Peg that bein g differ ent is better t han being n ormal , since the nor mal ones are as ` common as we eds'. This p hilosophy r eads as rather Nietzschean, on th e level of a rtists not bei ng restricted to the common mora l code. Directo r Karen Arth ur either h as those s igning also spe aking o r those signing being tran slate d for the audience, though in one scene the sound of lapping waves drowns out the dialog ue between Dan and Peg. She also gives Matlin some good mome nts, one being her scr eam o f horror when she hears the news of the death of her husband, and ano ther when she cha ses Remick down a flight of ste ps, h itting her .
