Magdalena and Ma ria are two twi n sisters who were separated at birth and know noth ing of the other’s existence. Maria runs awa y from the boarding school in which she w as brought u p and finds work as a cabare t performer in the cafés of Marseilles. Magdalena lives with he r adopted par ents and works in an art gallery. The two sisters are join ed by an invisible bond which dr aws them towards the same tragic conc lusion. Director Werner Schroeter has acq uired a r eputa tion as an expe rimentali st filmmaker, hailed by some as an underra ted geniu s, reviled by others fo r being a peddler of self-indulgent kitsch. Deux is arg uably Schroeter’s most a mbit ious, unsettling a nd repulsive work to date. The di rector c ertainly wastes no time in aliena ting his audience; from the first ten min utes of the film it is cl ear this is not going to be an easy ride. The narra tive cuts haphazardly betwe en seemingly unconnected events, alternating betwee n realis m and styli sed fantasy dream sequenc es, peri odically shocking the spectator with graphic images of lesbian s ex and a woman bein g slowly disembowell ed. Having several actor s pla ying multiple parts only adds to the sense of artifice and utter conf usion, which is a pity as there is manifestly a lot of great acting talen t on show – not l east of wh ich is Isabell e Huppert.
