Magdalena and Maria are tw o twin sisters who we re sep arated at bi rth and know nothing of th e other’s e xisten ce. Maria run s away from the boardi ng school in which s he was bro ught up and finds work as a cabaret performer in the c afés of Marseilles. Magdal ena lives with her adopt ed parents and work s in an art gallery. The two si sters are join ed by an invisible bond w hich draws them towards t he same tr agic con clusion. Director Werner Schroeter has acquired a reputati on as an experi mentalist filmmake r, hailed b y some as an u nderrated genius, reviled b y othe rs for being a peddler of self-indulgent kitsch. Deux is arguably Schr oeter’s mos t ambitious, unsettling an d repulsive wor k to date. The director certa inly wastes no tim e in alienat ing hi s audience; from the fir st t en mi nutes of the film it is clear th is is no t going to be an easy ride. The narrative cuts hap haza rdly between seemingly unconnect ed even ts, a lternating between realism and stylised fantasy dream sequen ces, peri odically shocking the spectator with graphic images of le sbia n sex and a woman bein g slowly disembowe lled. Having several actors playing multiple parts only adds to the s ense of artifice and u tter confusion, which is a pity as there i s manifestly a l ot of great acting talent on sh ow – not lea st of which i s Isabell e Hupp ert. Th e film’s sheer relentle ss grotesqueness and s elf-indu lgen ce is so extreme , so unbrid led, s o stomach-churnin gly provocative, that it is hard to tak e any of it seriously.
