Fernando D i Leo's Mi lano Calibro 9 is an out-and-out masterpiec e of Italian Crime cinem a and, in my opinio n, one of the most astonish ing crime stories ever told. The first film in Di L eo's excelle nt 'Milieu' trilogy, Milano Calibro 9 was followed b y La Mala O rdina (aka . Manhunt , also 1972) and the brilliant Il Boss (1973). The three f ilms are not co nnected story-wise, bu t all thr ee are e xcellent, and hig hly realist ic portrayals of organi zed c rime. As far as I am concern ed Manhunt is (allthough excellent ) slightly inferior to this on e and Il Boss which both stand out as absolute all-time highlights o f cri me c inema. Milano Cali bro 9 is the bes t of t hem all, a film that is ast onis hing in a ll asp ects, be it the ingenious plot that, apart from a compelling stor y and clever twists, includ es so cial critici sm, the perf ormances, the g ritty atmosphere and suspense or the brilliant score. I can har dly find the right w ords to express my admiration f or this m asterpie ce which easily ranks among the greatest Gangster fl icks ever br ought to screen. Gastone Mo schin stars as Ugo Piaz za, a toug h and el liptical ex- convict who has just bee n relea sed from pris on. Imm ediate ly after h is release , Ugo is a pproache d by me mbers of the Milan mob lead by the irascible gan gster Roc co (Mario Adorf), a s they suspect him to be responsibl e for th e disappearance of a la rge sum of money belon ging to their boss, an American (Lionel Stand er) who control s the organized crime in M ilan... Milano Cal ibro 9 is a film that delivers an astonishing ly re alistic mood of the underworld like h ardly another. The intrigui ng story line goes in hand with interesting characters, raw atmospher e, suspens e and b reathtaking action, social cr iticism and brutal violence. The film is simply stunning from the beginning to the end, which is even intensi fied by the brilliant score, a collaboration of the famous composer Luis Enríquez Bacalov and t he Italian Progressive Rock ban d Osanna. Ugo Piazza must be one of th e most ch arismatic ga ngster cha racters ever in c inema, and Gastone Moschin was the pref ect choice for the role. Moschin delivers a brilli ant performance, and t he rest of the cast is also great. Mario Adorf is i rasc ible like a rabid dog as the feroci ous gangste r Rocco, a role that fits hi m like a glove. The great L ionel Stander fit s perfectly in his role of t he Americ an Mafia Don. T he two cop characters in the film are played by two of th e greatest regulars of Italian genre-c inema, Luigi Pistilli and Fran k Wo lff (w ho com mitted suicide before the film was released). The ravishin g Barbara Bouchet is astonishing and incredibly s exy in the role of Ugo Piazza's strip per girlfriend. Bouchet is both a stunning b eaut y and an exc ellent actr ess and this is doubtlessly one of her most mem orable roles. This is also a poli tical fi lm and director Di Leo embed ded a lot of so cial cri ticism about topics like corruption. This film simply h as ever ything one can pos sibly desire in c inem a. Films like Mil ano Ca libro 9 ar e the reason why I love cinema. Thi s is an absol ute master piece in all regards a nd, without exa gger atio n, one of t he greatest Cr ime flick s ever ma de!
