Fernando Di Leo's Mila no Calibro 9 is an out-and-out masterpiece of Italian Crime cinema and, in my opinion, one of t he most astonis hing crime stories ever t old. The first film in Di Leo's excellent 'Milieu' trilogy, Milano Calibro 9 was followed by La M ala Ordina (aka. Manhunt, also 1972) and the brilliant Il Boss (1973). The three films are not connected s tory-wise, but all three are ex cell ent, and highly realistic portrayals of organized crime. As far as I am conce rned Ma nhunt is (allthough excellent ) slightly inferior to this one and I l Boss wh ich both stand out as absolute all-time highli ghts of crime cinema. Mil ano Calibro 9 is th e be st of them all, a film that is as tonishin g in all aspects, be it the ingenious plot that, apart from a compelli ng st ory and clever twists, includes social c riti cism, the performa nces, the g ritty atmosphere and suspense or the br illiant score . I can har dly find th e righ t word s to express my admirat ion for th is m asterpiece which easily ranks among the gr eatest Gangster fli cks ever brought to screen. Ga stone Moschin stars as Ugo Piazz a, a tough and elliptica l ex-convict who has j ust be en r eleased from prison. Imme diately after his release, Ugo is approach ed by members of the Mi lan mob lea d by the ira scible gangs ter Rocco (Mario Adorf ), as they suspect him to be responsibl e for the disappearance of a large sum o f money belonging to th eir boss, an American (Li onel Stander) who c ontrols the organized crime in Milan... Milano Calibr o 9 is a film that delivers a n astonis hingly realistic mood of th e underworl d like har dly anothe r. T he i ntriguing st oryline goes in han d with interesti ng characters, raw atmospher e, suspense and breathtaking action, social criticism and b rutal violence. The film is simpl y stunning from the beg inning to the end, which is even inten sified by the brilliant score, a collaboration of the famou s co mposer Lu is Enríquez Bacalov and the Itali an Progressive Rock band O sanna. Ugo Piazza must b e one of the mos t charisma tic gangster characters e ver in cinema, and Gasto ne Moschi n was the prefect choice for the role. Mosc hin de live rs a brilliant performa nce, and the rest of the cast is also grea t. Mario Adorf is i rascible li ke a rabid dog as the f erocious gangster Roc co, a role that fits him l ike a glove. The great Lionel Stander fits perfectly in his role of the American Mafia Don. The two cop characters in the f ilm are played by two of t he g reatest regu lars of Italian genre-c inema, L uigi Pistilli and Frank W olff (who committed sui cide before the f ilm was released) . The ravishing Barbara Bouchet is astonis hing and in cred ibly sexy in the role of Ug o Piazza's s tripper girlfriend. Bouchet is both a stunning beauty and an excellent ac tress and this i s doubtl essly one of her most memorable roles. This i s also a political film and director Di Leo embedded a lot of social cri ticism about topi cs like corruption. This film simply has everythi ng one can possibl y desire i n cinema. Fi lms like Milano Cal ibro 9 are the reason why I love cinema. This is an absolute master piece in a ll regards and, without exaggeration, one of th e greatest Crime f lick s ever made! T he ingeni ous open ing s cene alone is more mem orable t han most films get in two hou rs.
