Haunted by the memory of Walter H olderlin, a sol dier he k illed during World W ar I , French mus ician Pa ul Renard (P hillips Hol mes) confesses to a priest (Fra nk Sherid an), who grants him absoluti on. Using the add ress on a letter he found on the dead m an's body , Paul then travels to Ge rmany to find his family. As anti-French sentimen t continu es to permeate Germany, Dr. Holderlin (Lionel Barrymore) i nitially refuses to welcome Paul into his ho me, but chang es his m ind when his son's fiancée Elsa identifies him as the m an w ho has been leaving flowers on Walter's grave. Rather than reveal the real connection between them, Pau l tells the Hold erlin family he was a friend of thei r son, who attended the same musica l co nservatory he did. Although the ho stile townspeople and lo cal goss ips disapp rove, the Ho lderlin s befriend Paul, who finds himsel f falling in love with Elsa (Nancy Carroll). When she shows Pau l her fo rmer fiancé' s bed room, he becomes distraught and tell s her the truth. Sh e convinces him not to confess to Walter's pa rents, who have embrac ed hi m as their sec ond son , and P aul agrees to forego e asing h is con science and stays with his ado pted family. Dr. Holderlin presen ts Walter' s violin to Paul, who plays it while El sa accompa nies him on the pi ano. The film's orig inal title, The Man I Kil led, was c hang ed to The Fifth Commandment to avoid givi ng wrong impressions in the minds of the p ublic abou t the character of the story .
