Now Deadline repor ts Dakota Fanning will star in the peri od drama from writeractresa Thompso n wh ich chr onicles the strange romance, or lack thereof, between Gray a nd Ruskin. Despite her beaut y, Ruskin was said t o be disgusted with Gray's bod y, did n ot consummat e the m arria ge and annulled it, allowing her to marry R uskin's pr otégé John Everett Mil lais. Though Orl ando Bl oom was onc e attached to p lay Millais, apparently Tom Sturridge (Pirate Radio) has st epped into the rol e. In addition, Thomps on will also star i n the f ilm as Lady Eastlake, who t akes Effie under her wing when it becomes clear the union was destroying the young woman. Her husbandGr eg Wise (Johnny English) will play Ruskin while Julie Wa lters (Harry Potter f ranc hise) and Derek Jacobi (T he King's Speech) will play his p arents. Finally, Edward Fox (Gandhi) is in talks to play Eastlake's husband S ir Charles a man who was not only fed up wi th Ruskin an d his ra dical ideas, but also the main pa tron of the Royal Academy which held sway over what constituted fine art. Richa rd Laxto n (An Englishman in New York) is directi ng the fil m which begins shooting in Sc otland on October 1 7th wit h shooting to f ollow in Londo n and Venice as well. The cast has been shuffl ed on this p roject for awhile wit h Carey M ulli gan once attached t o the title role as well, but a cop yright infr ingement claim held up the film, which result ed in sch eduling conflic ts for th e previously attached cast members. Producer Don Rosenfel d says, It’a Thompson’s first original script afte r doing seve ral fine adaptations, and it gets to the heart of Victorian E ngland. Though this sounds a bit more along the lines of her work on S ense and Sensibil ity as opposed to Nann y McPhee, her work on the pag e should ma ke for a great Brit ish dram a down the road.
