This 1992 Japanes e fil m tells t he story of a scie ntist who sets out to create the new super Ada m and Eve, human s who cannot be controlle d by their emo tions. Of course, th e end result it not exactly what the good doctor expects. commen ts from imd b This modern tale of a n attempt to build a creature is one of the be st horror f ilms e ver made, even if its no t a horror f ilm but somet hing else entirely. Certainly it s on my short list of all time great films. Th is film was int rodu ced to me by someone who told me I h ave this fil m that probably one of the best films you'll ever see. It will move you and touch you and make you think, but if I told you what it is and told you h ow its do ne you will think its t he stupidest t hing o n the face of it and you won't watch it. In trigued I a sked what di d he mean, and he said, Well it s a F rankenstein story , with a very goof y sort of edge, but which us es it to its advantage. My ea rs p erked up, and I bei ng a t rustin g soul took the tape and watched it. I wa s blown away. The plot concerns a mad scientist atte mpting to make a new Adam and Eve i n the wa ke of a suicidal pl ague that is rav aging the world. Lock ed up in hi s lab his exp eriments go differently then e ither he or we expect. S ome of it is sill y (The bolts in the neck, the wre stling moves ...), all of it is touc hing and thoug ht provoking. I can not recommend this m ovie enough. If you a re willing to ta ke the film on it s terms and allow it to tell its story then I urg e you to seek this film out and see it. This is an undiscovered gem that will st ay wi th you forev er. 1 5 out of 10 a nd th en some. 101 0 Also known as T he Last Frankenste in, t his is an extraordina ry, impe ccably produ ced horror f ilm. Dire ctor Takeshi Kawamura uses Mary Shelley's novel as a mere launching p ad for an exploration of subjects as diverse and f ascinating as the natu re of love, desire , su icide , mass hypnosi s, sex , alienation and je alous y. And though the film is dense with su btext, it is als o stunnin gly photographed and ri ch in atmosphere and detai l. The performances are all amazing and Kawamura's se nsitive ha ndling of the strange, del icate relationships b etween the c haracters results in an emotio nally cha rged, angst -ridden traged y. Th e scenes of the co nfused, t roubled monster hurtl ing th rough a f og-shrouded forest at night are memorable and stri king, as is a brillian t home movie-style montage of the f ilm's more curi ous c hara cters enjoying a precious a fternoon at the beac h. Kawamura creates resonati ng v isual poe try of horror and s adness bar ely sig hted since Todd Browning's classic Freaks. Inte lligent, emoti onal, tragic and real, thi s is an absolute gem.
