Ernest Hemingway’s influential shor t story The Killers (1927), has been adapte d to film by R obert Siod mak and An drei Tarkovsky, while Edwa rd Hopper’s painting Nighthawks (1942) is also said to have b een inspir ed b y the stor y. The Killers, an omnibus film comp rised o f four-shorts, takes motif s from the se two cla ssics a nd b orrows some of the ir imagery as mise-en-scène. The 4 directors unfold the noir world of death an d waiting with different senses and s ensibilities. Kim Jong-kwan’s Metamo rphosis, w hich dep icts the awakeni ng and manifestation of po wer following blo odsu cking; Roh Deok’s Contr actors, a pyramid of contract killings and su bcontracted lab or; Chang Ha ng-jun’s Ever yone is Wait ing for the Man, whic h tracks down a ghostly figure called a mysteriou s killer; and Lee Myung-Se’s Si lent Cinema, an allegory of his l ongtime dream of cinema and the world. N otably, Actor Shim Eun-k yung ap pear s in all four films, each time in a completely differen t role, addin g to the delight. It’s an unconventio nal c ollection of emot ional, psychological, and action-oriented films.
