Unfortun ately, the visual sty ling ends up f eeling m isguided, as other than applying the fil ter it doe s not imitate any other a spects of the “Grind house” genr e. Despite trying to dir ty up t he fi lm, it is ap parent it was shot o n digital. T he cin ematography is also a step above most “G rindhouse” p roductions, with Takashi Hirose provin g he has talent behind the camera. Exterior sh ots to those taking place in small spaces ar e al l compete ntly framed , lit, and transition wel l. T he de cision to add an effect on top of the work hurts the film’s imagery and even gi ves a sense of de speration to try to c apture a certain type o f nos talgia with the audience, ins tead of r elying on its own stren gths. It is unf ortuna te w hen one cre ative choice can hurt a production so muc h. The story of “Brutal ” is simp le but effective, it does attempt some sort of so cial comme ntary about the vio lent n ature of men and w omen, but it does n ot o ffer enough depth into the sub ject to justify the amount o f violence on display. The fil m does e nd on a strong note wi th an intere sting twist, with a reveal that is b ound to gross some out, while giving others a chuck le. In s pite of its sim ple nature, those who enjoy films that make them s omewhat un comfortable an d enjo y the chall enge of getting throu gh s ome ultra-violence, “ Brutal” poses a fun and ente rtaining ch allenge in t hat regar
