In this very lat e 60's irreverent, almost anarchic lo w-budget film, Brian De Palma def ines more of his str ange, given Hitchcock -like fascination of voy eurism, an d attacks the issues of the day. The most prominent of which, both crin ge-inducin g an d jus t plain funny, is whe n he foc uses on the black-power movem ent (a bla ck woman handing o ut fliers asking white people 'do you know what it's like to be bla ck'), which is somethi ng t hat could only wo rk f or tha t time and place, not befo re or now. But one of the key thi ngs to the i nterest in the f ilm is 27 ye ar old Robert D e Niro (n ot his first or last fil m with the dire ctor), who pla ys this character who sits in a room lookin g out th rough his te lescope at women in their rooms, s etting up phony deals, and in the end basic ally throwin g bombs. Those who have said t hat D e Niro can't act and jus t is himself in ev ery movie should s ee this movie, if only out of some minor curiosity. A couple of times in the film it's actually not fun ny, as when t here 's a distur bance in a bl ack-power meeting (f ilmed in a grainer, ro ugher style tha n the rest of the film) . In the end it's capped off wit h a rambling monolo gue in a n interview that tops De Nir o's i n King of Comedy. It's pr etty obvious where De Palma's career would go after this, into sli ghtly more ma instre am H ollywood te rritory, but all of his trademarks are here; the dark , al most na il-biting comedy, the p erfectly timed st yle of v oyeu rism, and interesting usag e of locals. Think if De Palma an d De Niro did a Monty Python f ilm, only even more low -budget a nd in its Ne w York way just a s off-the -hinges, and you g ot Hi, Mom!
