A loving f ilm tribute to Rus sian filmm aker Larisa Shepitko , who died tragically in a c ar accident in 1979 at the ag e of 40. This documentary by h er husband , Elem Klim ov, includes excerpts from all of Shepitko's films, an d her own voice is h eard talking about her life an d art. El em Klimov's grief-stri cken elegy Larisa examines the life of his lat e wife—the film director Lari sa Shepi tko—throug h a series of dir ect-addres s interviews and photom ontages, set agai nst a mournful visu al-musical back drop. Typically, Klimov films his subjects (which include himself and several of Shepitk o's collaborators) wit hin a stark, snow-cove red for est, its tangled we b of trees standin g in as metap horical re presentation of a perhaps inexpres sible suffe ring, the result of Shep itko's premature death while filming he r adaptation of Valen tin Rasput in's novella Farewell to Matyora. Interw eaving home movie footage w ith s equences from Shepitko's work (Maya Bulgakov a's pensive plane cras h reminisce nce fro m Wi ngs takes on severa l new layers of resonance i n this context), Larisa's most power ful passage is its f irst ac compan ied by the grandiose final music cue from Shepitko's You and I, Klimov dissolves between a ser ies of perso nal photographs that encomp ass Larisa's entire life, from birth t o death. This brie f symphony of sorrow an ticipates th e cathartic r everse-motion cl imax of Klimov's Come and Se e, though by pl acing the scene first with in Larisa's chr onology, Klimov seems t o be work ing against catharsis. The pain is clearl y fresh, the wound s till festeri ng, and K limov wants—abov e all—to capture how d eep misery' s knife has cut.
