American ps ychologist J ohn Holden arrives in Lond on to par ticipate in a sy mposium ai ming to exp ose witchcraft and devil-worship as a fraud, with attentio n centered on a cult run b y a Julian Ka rswell. Debarking his pl ane, Holden learns that the sympos ium le ader, H enry Ha rrington, has sudd enly died and he is now i n charge. What only the audience knows is that Harrington was clearly killed by a demon, apparen tly summoned by Karswell to avenge his persecu tion. Despite both thr eatening and cajoling behavior by Karswell , Holden de termines to proceed, though the only cult member willing to talk abo ut his exp eriences is in a prison ps ychiatric ward, catatonic after allegedly killing yet another cul t me mber. Howeve r, Harring ton's niece, Joa nna, believes, based on her uncle's notes, that Karsw ell ma y ind eed have some satan ic powers derived from an an cient tome i n an ob scure language which he has been able to translate, and attempts to warn the skeptic Holden. Karswell's mother also attempts to war n Holden off. H owever, the thing whi ch begins t o most get to Holden are the occasional, b ut mounti ng, sensory and me ntal d isturbances he begins experiencing after an encount er with Karswell, and th e discove ry that, during this encou nter, Karswe ll secretly slipped a slip of parchme nt with a curse in runic symbo ls on i t into Holden's belongings, a parchmen t identical to one Harrin gton recorded h aving had passed to him in a similar manner shortly before his death ...
