David, now an old man, is still king of Israel. Among his sons, the ambitious Adonijah and the clever Solo mon. The two yo ung men a re fier ce ri vals, since both are prospective heirs to the throne and only one can b e succe ssful. During a hunting exp edition, Adonijah challenges hi s younger brother Solomon to a chariot race. W hile Solomon, though brave , sti ll retains a modi cum of caution, th e daredevi l Adonija h is eager to win a t all costs -- and loses con trol of his chariot. Solomon ta kes the ser iously injured Ado nijah back t o Jerusal em. On the way the re they meet the attrac tive Abishag, who despite her youth is versed in the use of heal ing herb s. She actually succeeds in helping the prince. Adonijah f alls in l ove wi th Abishag -- but Bathsheb a arranges thing s so that she works for David, hoping that her youth, her beauty and her heal ing powers will soothe t he old king's suffering. Several member s of the influential priesthood an d also t he respected army ge neral Joa b, who serv ed Dav id loyall y for many years, supp ort Ado nijah's c laim to the throne-- even though Da vid has still not made any decision with reg ard to a p otenti al successor. The battle -experien ced Joa b regards Solomon as an indeci sive weaklin g, under whose leadership the kingdom would soon fal l apart. When the p rophet Natha n finds out about Adonijah' s conspirac y he informs Bathsheba and Solomon, who urge D avid to take imme diate ac tion. And so it come s to pass that preparations to anoint the fut ure king of Israel are made both at the Spring of Enrogel, w here A donija h and his men are encamped, as well as in Jerusalem. The festive procession for Adonijah has already been assembled and the people enticed with delic ious delicacies to cheer him on, when the new s of Solomon 's coronation reaches En rogel. The people promptly ac knowl edge the will of King David and stream o ff to Jeru salem in their hordes to g reet Solomon, their futur e ru ler. Adonijah remains be hind with a handful of loyal followers. He r ealizes that he has lost -- for the time be ing. Humbly he places hi s life in his br other's hands. Adon ijah is forgiven on one conditi on that he always rema ins loy al to his brother Solomon. The great King David is dea d, and h is son S olomon has succeede d hi m as t he rightfu l ruler of Israe l. Adon ijah now has a request to make of Bath sheba he wants to marry Abishag. Solomon hears about this seemin gly innocent wish, an d recognizes it as a ren ewed ploy on behalf of his brother to rec laim the throne -- Adonijah's marriage to the last wo man to share King Dav id's bed wou ld strengthen his political position considerab ly. Solomon knows tha t he has t o act qu ickly and de cisively if he is to secure his own power. H e has h is brot her Adonijah and th e latter's closest associate Joa b executed. After this radical decision, Sol omon withdra ws to present sacrifices. In a dream the Lord appears to him and gr ants him the fulfi llmen t of a wish, whatever it ma y be. Solom on merely asks for wisdom -- i n order to become a good r uler and judge. War wit h Egypt is looming. To arm his kingdom agains t the terri torial ambitions of its powerful neighbors, Solomon not only in trodu ces several reforms but also decides to marry the da ught er of the pharaoh. Th e Egyptian princess does not remain Solomon's only wife , how ever as time goes by the ki ng marries numerous noble women from many different coun tries fo r political and econo mic r easons. In this way he p reserves peace for his people, and cre ates great prosperity. By allowi ng the women to con tinue practicing their d omest ic customs and r eligi ous rituals in Jerusa lem as well, he come s into regular conflict with the priesthood , who see the foreig n religio ns as endangering Israel's sole covenant with the Lord. The w isdom grante d to Solomon by God b ecomes full y evident whe n the king sits in judgment. One day two harlots each claim to be mother of the sam e baby. Solomon's decision seems utterly cruel he says that the child should be cut in two so that each woman rec eives hal f. Solomon c an now dete rmine who th e real mother is from her rea ction she will not allow her child to be h armed. Solomon hands the c hild bac k to its tr ue mother amid cheers of appr oval . One of the mos t impor tant tasks handed down to Solomon by his father Da vid is building th e great Tem ple to house the Ark of the Covenant. It has to be large r and more magnificent than all oth er te mples i n the world, and So lomon now sets abou t fulfi lling his father's wish. He places Jeroboam in charge of the Israelite workers as chie f overseer. Seve n years later, the work is completed. The expen sive construction materials have been brought from far -off lan ds, and the peopl e of Israel have p aid exceedingly high taxes without c omplaint in order t o fina nce the con struction work. The Ark of the Covenant can now finally be taken to the Temple in a triumphant proces sion. Afte r so many years of wan dering, the Israelites' most sacred possession now has a fixed home o f its own. Peop le str eam to Jer usalem fr om across the entire country to celebr ate the great day . Abishag, now married, comes to o and brings her family. Solom on has decided to mingle among the people in disguise, and he an d Abishag are o verjoyed when they a ccidental ly meet again after so many years. The Tem ple makes Je rusalem and its king famou s throughout the wor ld. Even the dark-skinned Quee n of Sheba sets off wit h a large retinue to visit the wise and c ultivat ed Solomo n and admire his magnifi cent city. The admiration turns out to be m utual Solomon, c apti vated by her beauty, f alls deeply in love wi th her. The two of them have a child, Menelik, but one day th e Queen of Sheba decides to leave. She does not want Menelik to be deprive d of the regal d ignity awai ting h im in his home country. Solomon sta ys behin d, wi th a heavy heart. The king has now achieved everythin g he set his heart on, but with the passi ng of the years the wi se Solomon gradually becomes a me lanc holy, skep tical old man who regula rly questions his very existence. Material things se em to repres ent the only reality for him. He also refuses to ad opt any kind of ste ady policy, e spec ially in religiou s mat ters . With his forei gn wives, Sol omon sacrifices to foreign gods, an d this incur s the wrath of the priesthood. The loyal Je roboam appe als to his king's conscience, but to n o avail. During one of So lomon's so rties in disguise among his peopl e, a simple farmer rem inds him of the first of th e Ten Commandments rev ealed by the Lord to Moses You shall have no other gods bef ore me. At another de cisive moment, God Himself speaks to Solomon and anno unces the punishment for h is sinfulness th e kingdom will collapse aft er Solomon's death. The kin g has grow n old and weary. He has lost touch with the pe ople of Israel, who a re suffering from heavy taxat ion and forced labor. Solomon has treated his long -standin g companion Jeroboam, to whom he entrusted th e administration of the nor thern tribes, with murderous an ger ever since a proph et predicted the divis ion of t he kingdo m to him. The king no lon ger has the strength to c hange things -- he just leav es them a s they are. The consequences of this become cle ar short ly a fter hi s dea th. Solomon's son a nd succes sor Reh oboam treats the coun try's leaders with arrogance, and provo kes the division of the kingd om i nto two parts the on ly trib e still loyal to him is that of J udah, while all the others unite under Jeroboam.
