The Dol l is an a dapt atio n of the novel, The Doll (novel) by B olesław Prus, which i s regarded by many as o ne of th e finest Po lish novels ever writte n and, along with Pharao h (novel), made Bolesław Prus a p otential candidate for the Nobel Prize i n litera ture. The influence of Émile Zola is e vident, and some have compared the novel t o Madame Bo vary by Gustave Flaubert; both were Prus's c onte mporaries. T he mov ie, however, may be more compared to Stendhal's L e Rouge e t le Noir, (The Red a nd th e Black). The Doll constitutes a pa norama of lif e in Warsaw betwee n 1878 and 1879, and at the same time is a subtle story of three ge nerations of Polish idealis ts, their psychological complications , their involvement in the history of the ninet eenth century, social dramas, moral p roblems and the experience of tragic ex istence. At the same ti me this story describes the disin tegr atio n of socia l relati onships a nd the gr owing separ ation of a s ociety whos e aristocr atic elite spreads the m odels o f vanity and idleness. This poetic love story fol lows a nouve au riche merchant, Stanislaw Wokulski, through a ser ies of trials and trib ulations occasio ned by his ob sessive passion f or an aristo cratic beauty, Izabela Lecka, played by the famous Po lish actres s, Beata Tyszkiewic z. Marryi ng the late owner' s widow (who even tually dies) , he come s into money and uses it to set up a partn ership with a Russi an merch ant he had met wh ile in exile. The two merchants go to B ulgaria du ring the Ru sso-Turkish War of 1877-78 , and Wokul ski makes a for tune su pplying the Russian Army. The enterpris ing Wokulski now proves a roma ntic at heart, fa lling in love with I zabela, daughte r of the vacuous, ba nkrupt aristocrat, T omasz Łę cki. In his quest t o win Izabela, W okulski begins frequenti ng theatres and a ristocratic sa lons; a nd to help her financia lly distressed father, fou nds a company and s ets the a ristocrat s up as shareholder s in his business.The indolence o f these ar istoc rats, who s ecure with their pensions, are too la zy to undertake new business risks, frus trates Wokulski. His ability to make money is respec ted but his lack of family a nd social ra nk is condescended to. Because of his help (in secret) to I zabel a's impec unio us but inf luenti al father, the g irl becomes awa re of his af fect ion.
