Due to some common interests between Germa n and Russian aristocr acy ( the Russians even had ar istocr ats in their past no t to mentio n they had an Empres s called C ather ine the Great, a s great as this German coun t's heiresses… ), it is no t strange that this Teutonic count has understood and even enj oyed Herr S. M. Eisenst ein's Staroye I Novoye. It is not very usual that for the ar istocracy to enjoy Bolsh evist films full of proletar ian demands that put private property at r isk or as it happens in this case, a film about the Communist Party's policy on th e subject of the coll ectivization of the Soviet agriculture. Normally this would be pe rfect gibberish for this Ge rman count, but thanks t o Herr Eise nstein ' s greatn ess and dir ectorial talent, the hardships of the hero ine of the film, Dame Marfa ( Dame Marfa Lapkina ) breached even the thi ck aristocratic Schl oss walls. And that's one of the first remarkabl e aspec ts of this oeuvre; i n spite of the political s ubject of the film, the powerful images and lyricism ( astonis hing and beautiful shot compositions ), especiall y during the first part of the movie , preserve the artistic mer its entirely while se rving a propaganda purpose. The second remarkable a spect o f the film is the dicho tomy b etween the old an d new, the fight to improve the lot of Dame Ma rfa and her coun trymen. There are many dis cussi ons because it is n ot easy eve n in Russia to c hange ancient and conse rvative c ustoms. Ther e ar e superb metaphors and social criticism ( illiteracy , bur eaucr acy, religio sity ) w hich perfectly fit the film, an d last but not least, Staroye I Novoye, is a kind of archaic documentary about ancie nt customs e stab lished d eeply in old Rus sia, those ones th at our heroine must fight agai nst. An d th ere is also a lot about agriculture ( very enl ightening for this German count) , especially about harve stin g and how to fatten Russian cows or pigs ( literally, no pun here… ). Herr Eisenstein had to bear during the last er a of his f ilm career, unbelievable censor ship and mutilat ion of his work , as happens with Star oye I Novoye. The film wa s reedit ed and Eisenstein accused of sympat hizing with Trostky's policies but f ortunately t he film was restored and showed by the German-fren chif ied t.v. chann el ARTE, natürlich! , including an evocative music scor e by Herr Taras Bujewski, that fits superbly Herr Eisenstei n primal artistic interests. And no w, if y ou'l l allow me, I must temporarily take my leave bec ause this German Coun t must buy a tractor for one of h is Teut onic heiress
