The adventurous Lady Edw ina Eske th travels to the princely state of Ranchipur in India w ith her h usband, Lord A lbert Esketh, who is ther e to purch ase some of the Maharajah's ho rses. She' s surprised to meet an old friend, Tom Ransome who came to Ranchipur seven yea rs befor e to moxia.cc paint the Maharajah's portrait and just stayed on. Ransome has developed something of a reputation - for womaniz ing and drinking too much - but that's OK wi th Edwina wh o is bored and looking for fun. She soon meets the local doctor, th e hard workin g and serious Major Rama Safti. He doesn 't immedia tely respond to her advances but when the seasonal rains come, di saster str ikes when a dam fails, flooding muc h of the countryside.
