A quick glimpse at the cast for this film would make any horror fan giddy with glee. T he actual mo vie doe sn't live up to those hig h expectatio ns, but it's far from bein g all bad. Desi Arnaz Jr. (!) plays an author who makes a craz y $20,000 b et with h is publishe r that h e could w rite a great nove l in only 24 hours. To do so, the pu blisher gives him the keys to an old abandoned house wher e he won't be d isturbed. Not true. Once he get s there he is interrupte d by a multitude of guests including a family wh ich consists of John Carra dine , Sh eila Keith, Peter Cushing and Vincent Pri ce. They are gathere d there in a twiste d family re union to r elease their brother from the room h e's bee n impr isoned in for forty years. Even Christopher Lee drops by a s Cor rigan, the man who has just purchase d the ho use. So on, they realize t hat the ca ged br other is loose and out for revenge. What a great plotline and wh at a dream cast! This movie should have bee n a hell of a lot be tter. It's hard to pinpoint the exact p roblems with the film, but I would venture to say that the lack of lighting was a major fault. Sure the house has no el ectricity but I think they took the title of t he movie a litt le to o literally. Scenes after scenes ar e barely visible and the act ors' faces are u ndecipherable. Only the mom ents in the main din ning hall are well lit. Also , the great actors are given very little to do. Cushing gets a few chuckles a s the scared brother but Price, Lee and especially Carra dine are somewhat wasted here . Well, at least Pr ice gets the best line of t he film `Please don't interrupt me whi le I am soliloquizing.' And on the plus side, t he story has en ough twists and turns througho ut to ke ep o ne`s intere st and the ending, while a bi t of a co p-out, manages to surpr ise.
