The di fference between this and th e aforementioned films is tha t Wil d in the Streets is reasonabl y clever and well- made. It isn't sympathet ic t o th e counter culture and will likely offend those with fond memories of the time. S urprisingly, it was a big hit wh en re leased an d appealed to the youth who m it ridiculed so much. Unlike The Trip and Psych-Out (two other AIP films), its not an accurate represen tation of the movement at all. However it does work as social satire. T he direction by Barr y She ar is go od a nd makes innovative use of sp lit screen photography. P lus, he keeps ev erythi ng moving at a quick pace. In i ts f unny moment s, the film works well. In its attem pts at dram a, its helples sly dated and just as funny as the humorous moments. Christopher Jones u nderplays his role and Shelly W inters ove racts. Hal Holbrook o ffers the best performance and Diane Varsi achieves the right note of grooviness. The script by Robert Thom has its moments, especially th e ending (ea sily the most ingenious part of the film). Wild i n the St reets isn't perfect, but deserves re cognition as an interestin g misund erstanding of the hal lucination genera tion. Those into this kind of kitsc h will enjoy it the most.
