On a hot summer afterno on in New York, Emma Jones gossip s with other nei ghbors in h er residential buildin g about the affair that Mrs. Anna Maurrant and the milkman St eve Sanke y are having. When the rud e and unfriendly Mr. Fran k Maurr ant arrives, the y change the subject. Meanwh ile, their teenage daughter Rose Maurrant is be ing sexually pr essured by h er married boss Mr. Bert Easter. She does howeve r ve ry much l ike her kind young Jewish neig hbor Sam, who has a seriou s cr ush on her . The next morni ng, Frank Maurra nt tells his wife tha t he is travelin g to Stamford on business. Mrs . Maurrant meets the g entle Sankey in her apartm ent, but o ut of the bl ue Frank come s back home. He realizes his wife is upstairs with Sankey, and run s upst airs. We hear sh ots and see the two men strugg ling as Sanke y tries to escape through the w indow. Maurr ant run s out with a gu n. He has killed Sankey and fatally wounded his w ife. Maurra nt is appreh ended and is led away by polic e. He apologizes t o his daughter Rose, who will now have to take ca re of herself and her young brother without either parent. Rose's boss offers once again to set her up in h er own apartment, but she re fuses. Then she sees Sam, and tells him she wants to leave the city. Sam pleads with he r to let hi m go with her, but she tells him it will be better for the two of them to have a c ouple of years apart before they consider becoming a couple. Rose walks o ff dow n the str eet by herself.
