Howa rd Tyler (Frank Lovejoy) is a family man, li ving in California, who can't seem to get b y financially. He meets up with a small-time, but ch arismatic, hood Jerry Slocum (Lloyd Bridges). Soon, Sl ocum convinces Tyler to participate in gas stat ion ro bberie s to ge t by. Later, they kidnap a weal thy man in hopes of getting a huge ransom. Th ings go wrong when the man is mur dered by S locum then throw n in a lake. Tyler re aches his limit emotiona lly, and h e begins drinkin g heavily. He mee ts a lo nely woman and confess es the crime while drunk. Th e woman flee s and goes to the police. When the two kidnapp ers are arrested, a lo cal journali st (Richard Carlson) writes a s eries of ha te-fill ed articles ab out the two prisoners which ev entually lead to a brutal lynch ing. The despair of the lower middle-class A family man ashamed of bei ng une mployed allows himself to be convinced by a gangster to take part in a kidnap ping. The police arrests them both a nd the anger of th e small town’s population is unforgiv ing. THE SOU ND OF FURY is a dark crime movie th at builds up to an apocalyp tic storm, but neve r loses si ght of social realities, thus telling a lot about the daily d espa ir of the working-class. A master piece, it was Cy Endfield’s last film before he felt compel led to move to Br itain.
