The issue of War wid ow representation in Isra eli c inem a is one of the most complex for the local industr y for it seems to be u nique and with a very loca l and specific iconography. The war Widow is a difficult character to digest. Because this is an especia lly painfu l topic in Israel, its mode of representation is almost always prob lematic. Gila Almagor i n Tofano's siege is one of t he first chara cters of the modern war widows t o appear on Israeli cinem a screens. The human and social complexity of th e status of widows was not rep resent ed ad equatel y and personal ly until her complex and fine appea rance i n this film . It w as m ostly Prece ded by cliches of heroic women who have s acrificed for the nation wit h characte rs to which it was very difficult to get att ached, nor to their per sonal grief. Si ege was direc ted by an unknown Italian di rector of tha t period. Althoug h Gil berto Tofano was brou ght as a professional d irector on the wing s of inspiration made b y the Fr ench New Wave o f thos e years, he managed to turn out a ver y exciting work wh ich has cau ght the Israeli war mth and sense of social siege which surrounds the Israeli widows, including t he g reat expectations from the m and the so cial stigmas. Tofano wrapped his leadi ng lady w ith lots of warmth and gave a pl ace of hon or to Almagor 's impressive presence in the film. This is without a doubt one of Almagor' s best and m ost accurate perform ance s. The re straint in her performance plus the shooting an d expressive use of angles b y Tofano and his soft E uropean tou ch which was far of f from the aggressive local product managed to produ ce a sense of doc umenting an authentic tragedy wit h a ta ngible pers onal touch that minimized the national dimens ion. The result stan ds the test o f time pr oudly several decades a fter its c reation.
