The film opens wi th a narrated disclaimer ov er footage of an opening coffin. T he narrator explains that the film's cl imax is so terrifyi ng that it may kill the viewer, and reassu res the audience that if they die of fright while watc hing the f ilm, they will receive a free burial serv ice, and i t closes on the casket whic h has a car d inside readin g Reserve d for You.[ 1] Newlywed s Jenni (Peggy Webber) and Eric (Joh n Hudson) move into Eric's palatial country home. Jen ni is Eric's second wife; his firs t wife Marion died when she ac ciden tally slipped and h it her head on the edge of a dec orative pond on the e state. At the home the y meet Eric's friends, the Reveren d Snow (Ru ss Conw ay) and his wif e (Ton i Johnson), as well as Mickey (Alex Ni col), the developmental ly disab led gard ener. Eric privately me ntions to the Sn ows th at Jenni spent t ime in a n asylum following the s udden death of both her parents, and Mrs. Snow reveals that Jenn i is very wealthy. Jenni is disturbe d both by Mickey's belief that Marion's gho st wander s the estate and by Marion's s elf-portrait inside the house, which Jenni believes resembles her mother. When s he begin s to he ar un explai ned screamin g noises and see skulls around her house, she believes that Marion is haunt ing her. Though Eric spe culates t o Jenni that Mi ckey, who was a childhood friend of Marion and thus disl ikes Jenni , may be behind the trickery, Jenni worries that she is going insane. Eric t hen sug gests to remove Marion's self -portrait from t he home. Eric and Jenni take the painting ou tside and burn it . While they clean up the r emains of th e painting, a skull eme rges from t he ashes . While Jen ni panics at the sigh t of the skull, Eric denies that the skull is there. Je nni faints and Eric wi thdraws the skull and hides it, rev ealing that he was responsible for the trickery all along i n an effort to get hold of her wealth. Believing she has finally lost her sanity, Jen ni r esolves to be c ommitted. S he tells Eric that the entire property will be meticulously se arched for the skul l as a last resort. Before Eric can retrieve it, Mick ey secretly steals the skul l and brings it to the Rever end, revea ling Eric' s plans. That ni ght, Eric prepare s to murder Jenni and stage it as a s uicide. Jenni sees Mario n's ghost in Mic key' s greenhouse and flees back t o the house. When she e nters, Eric begins throttling her. The gh ost then appear s and cha ses Eric out side and about the prope rty; i t fi nally corners a nd at tacks him, drowning him in the decorative pond. After Jenni regai ns co nsciousn ess, the Snows arri ve. Mrs. S now comforts a hysterical Jenni and the R everen d discovers Eric's body in the pond. Some undisclosed time later, Jenni and the Snows depart f rom the house. Reve rend Snow declares whether or not Marion's death was an ac cident w ill remain a mystery.
