Beginning j ust after the bloody Sioux victory over General Custe r at Little Big Horn , Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee intertwines the perspective s of thr ee characters Charles Eastman (B each), né Ohiyesa, a young, Dartmouth-educa ted, Sioux doctor held up as living pro of of the al leged success of assimilation; Sitting Bull (Sc hellenberg), the proud Lakota chief who refuses to sub mit to U.S. governmen t pol icies designed to strip his people of their identity, their dign ity and their sacred land – the gold-laden B lack Hills of the Dakotas; and Senator Henry Dawes (Qui nn), who was one of the architects of the government policy on Indian affairs. While Eastman and patrician scho olteac her Elain e Goodal e (Paquin) work to improve life for the Ind ians on the reserv ation, Senator Dawes lobbies Preside nt Grant (Thomps on) for more humane treatment, opposing the bellicose stance of General Will iam Tecumseh Sh erman (F eore). Hope rises for the Ind ians in the f orm of the prophet Wovoka (Studi) and t he Ghost Dan ce – a messiani c movement t hat pr omises an end of their sufferi ng under t he whit e man.
