The moody Clyde soon falls i n love with Nancy's honest charm and beauty. Nancy, a secretary, introd uces Cly de to her boss, millionaire Andrew Bonner, a nd persuades Bonner to sho wcase Clyde's paintings at one of his private sho wing s. To Nancy' s del ight, Clyde 's painting, a depict ion of t he tragic figure C assandra for which she modeled, wins first prize at the show ing. The evening is perfect until an expensive bracelet is stolen from a g uest, and Clyde later fin ds it in Nancy's purse. After C lyde conf ronts a confused Na ncy about th e theft, she rela tes the follow ing story to explain her behavior As a young girl, Nancy lives with her ho usekeeper mother in the lavish W illis home and plays wi th Karen, the Willises' little daughter . Althoug h Kar en wants to invite Nancy to her upcoming birthda y par ty, Mrs . Willis refuses to allow the lower-class Nancy to attend. A true friend, Karen promi ses to give Nancy one of the pins her guests are r eceiving. When Karen realizes ther e are no extra pins, however, she of fers Nancy the beautiful lock et sh e has just recei ved from her mother. Na ncy's subsequent joy is soon crush ed when Mrs. Will is d emands that she return the locket. Later, the locket is d iscovered miss ing, and Nan cy is accused of theft. Althou gh Nan cy's mother soon finds the locket in Karen's dress, Mrs. Willis refuse s to b elieve Nancy and forces her to confess . Th e adu lt Nancy the n adm its to Clyde that this childh ood hu miliation c ause d her unconscio us des ire to steal the bracelet at the party. Afte r a forgiv ing Clyde returns the bracelet anonymously, he a nd Nancy con tinue their romance until the nex t party at the Bo nners' . Suspecting that the abse nt Nancy is spending the evening in Bonne r's arms, C lyde leaves the party to lo ok for her and sees her exit ing Mrs. Bonner's bedroom just after two gunshot s are fired. Bon ner is fo und m urder ed, and Mrs. Bonner's diamond necklace, stolen. Although Nancy and Clyde are questioned, valet Myron Dexter is e ventually f ound gui lty and is sentenced to die. Cl yde, howeve r, s trongly sus pects Nanc y, but she an grily main tains h er innocen ce and leaves for Flor ida. Back in his office, Blair defends N ancy to Clyde but invites him to his h ouse that evening. When confronted, Nancy denies everything an d tells Blair tha t Clyde is merely jealou s. The next day, Dexter is execute d, a nd a g uilt-ridden Clyde jumps from Bl air' s office wi ndow to his death. To avoid scandal, Bla ir and Nancy move to England, and after World War II breaks out, Blair volunteers his me dical s ervices , while Nancy becomes an ambulanc e driver. Expressing concern over Blair's health, Nan cy insists that they take a vacation at Lord a nd Lady Wyndha m's manor ho use. Ju st as they are leav ing, Blair learn s that one of Lady Wyndham' s val uable j ewels has been stolen. Blair suspect s Nancy but is unable to pr ove anythi ng unti l a bomb destroys thei r fl at and reveals her cache of stolen jewels. Altho ugh confronted d irectly, Nancy continues to deny any guilt and d ivorces Blair after he suffer s a nerv ous breakdown. Back in John's stud y, Blair, like Clyde before him, tries to convince John to abandon N ancy, who now uses the name Patton. John, how ever, bel ieves Nancy when she te lls him that Blair is still suf fering from his breakd own. Moments b efore the weddin g is to start, Nancy's future mother-in-law, the unsus pecting Mrs. Willis, gi ves her the same lock et that she once took away, and tells her that it is a precious fa mily heirloom. The l ocket cause s Nancy to be overcome with guilt, and she collaps es at the a ltar in hyst erics. As Nancy is later taken awa y to an in stitution, John sadly re alizes the truth of Blair's story, but determines to see Nancy through he r crisis.
