This is an in teresting yet biza rre little tale of a fictional (as far as I know, anyway) ex periment per formed during the Stalin -controlle d years in the USSR . The main character is changed from a wom an i nto a man. This is part of a larger plan to change more wo men into m en and have a stronger work-f orcea rmy, etc . It's a very in-depth character stud y of the main charact er, who tries to f it into a world that she (now 'he ') doesn't really understan d, especially since sh e's now a man ... St alin dislikes the results of the ex peri ments and h as the sci entist kille d. The main character then goes off to live a li fe as a simp le, unknown e veryday Soviet, bu t is ine xplicably d rawn into larger and la rger schemes (somewhat remini scent of Forr est Gump in that way). ( s)He has run-ins with different important chara cters, incl uding his ex-boyfriend from his days of being a woman, as well as going on a demented quest for the nurse with whom he possibly fell in love afte r the operation ... However, he is t rapped in his life as an important Sovie t married man, and in th e end m akes a huge sacrifice fo r his country (unwillingly), and the mov ie goes from there to an endi ng that is possibl y happ y, yet still som ehow incredibly depressing.
