The subject of Danièle Hui llet and Jean-Marie Straub’s Der Tod des Empedokles (The Death of Empedocles, 1 987) i s the Greek pre-Socrati c philosoph er Empedocles (c. 490 BC – 430 BC), who lived in the G reek colony of A grigentum in Sicily. His theories are mentioned i n several o f Plato’s dialo gues. He m aintained that all matter is made up o f four ir reducible elements wa ter, e arth, air and fire. A mystic and a p oet, he is considered to be th e founder of classical rhetori c. He is also thought to be the last Greek philosopher to write in verse; t wo frag ments of hi s works surv ive Kathar moi (Purifications) and Peri Phuseôs (On Nature). An advoc ate of democ racy , he came in to co nflict with hi s fel low citizens of Agrigentum and , as result, was banished with his young discipl e, Paus anius. Wh en he was asked to return , he preferred to comm it suicide b y thr owing himself into the active volcano at M ount Aetna. The German writer Fried rich Hölde rlin wrote two versions of Der Tod des Empedokles i n 1798 and 1800, a nd a final third version in 1820 , all three ult imately unfinish ed. The y were conc eived as five-act tr agedies and all t hree diffe r in plot. A ccording to Michael Hamburger, Hölderlin’s English- language translato r, the main reason why Hölderli n finished n o version of the pl ay must b e that he remained too closely identifi ed with Empedocles, at the very per iod in his life when h is own view of the poet as philosoph er, prophet and priest – a nd as tragic h ero – w as subject to perpetual crisis a nd re-exam ination. Huillet-Straub’s The Death of E mpedo cles is based on H ölderlin’s first ver sion (the longest of t he three), where as Black Sin i s based on the third versi on.
