England is now a ba rren landscape, li ttered with derelict cars an d buildi ngs, hills of old boots, broken crocke ry, and ot her debris . Forty mil lion people peri shed and the re a re only 20 known surv ivors. The Queen did n ot s urvive, and of the 20 known sur vivors the next in li ne for the throne is a Mrs Ethel Schroake of 3 93a High Street , Leytonstone. Amo ng th e other survivors are R alph Richa rdson (O Lucky Man!) a s Lord Fortnum of Alamein, who isn't looking forw ard to his impend ing mutation into a bed sitting r oom. Michael Hordern is Bules Martin, wh o wears a 18-car at Hovis bread ring. Sp ike Milligan is a postman w ho wa nders around a nd d elivers some mem orable dialogue, for example An d in come the three bears - the daddy bear said, 'Who's been sle eping in m y porridge' - and the m ummy bear said, 'that's no porridge, that was my wife' . Arthur Lowe i s slow ly turni ng i nto a parrot (which i s then eaten by Spike Mil ligan) , while his wife, t he owner of her o wn death certificate, tur ns into a wardrobe. Hi s da ughter i s pregn ant with a strange cr eature, which she has he ld i nside her fo r seve nteen months . Peter Co ok and Dudley Moore are a pair of policemen wh o perp etually tell the others to keep m oving!. Moore growls a lot and turns into a dog at the en d. Marty Feldman i s a wellington-boot-wearing nurse. I t's a hilarious, absurdist treat, and one of my treasured fil mic pleasures.
