PANI C BEATS begins w ith a totally n ude woman with welts on her body, running thro ugh a misty forest full of deca yed s keletons. A knight on horseba ck is cha sing her, and we soon learn that he is Alaric de Marnac ( a wicked character Nasc hy first created for HORROR RISES FROM THE TOMB) , viciously killing her for her unfaithfu l ways. After the credit s role, we are taken to the present where a descendent of Marn ac named Paul (Naschy) i s ma rried to the wealthy Gene viève (J ulia Saly) w as has s ome serious heart problems. Paul decides to take her to his anc estral home in t he countr y for some peace and quiet, but the superstitious-filled setting opens a Pandora’s Box of terrible occ urren ces. We soon di scover tha t Pau l is a re al son-of-a-bitch who pla ns to sc are his wife to dea th, plann ing to control her fortune and c ontinue his secret affair wit h seductive bad girl Mireille (Silvia Miró), w ho happens to be the niece of the tarot car d-reading housekeeper, M abile (Lo la Gaos). Paul’s malev olent sch eme works, but he still has to wo rry abou t an a dditional mone y-hungr y mistress (th is guy really gets around!), the unf orgiving Ma bile, as w ell as ne w fianceé Mireille who might be hiding a thing or two h erself. M ore grisly murders follow, and the ghost of Marnac returns from hell t o pun ish the most despicable human charac ter in th e film. PANIC BEATS was also written by Nasc hy (under h is real nam e Jacinto Molina) who injects the film with an ol d-fashioned spooky house motif, beefed up with a modern m ovie sense of vio lenc e and sexuality. The film off ers n othing too innovative storywise, and even Naschy admits on the disc’s ex tras that it wa s part ly inspired by GASLIGHT and REBEC CA, but he see ms to just toss in a hodgepodge of exploi tation and horror ingredients, w hile deliv erin g a stylish and enjoyable effo rt w ith a numbe r of twists and some genuinely chilling moments. The camera shots and lightin g are both effectiv e, and there's even does a cool set-up (much like what Freddie Francis d id in THE SKU LL and THE C REEPING FLESH) where we se e the point of vi ew of Marnac through his dark hel met as he stalks his female prey. Graphically, we are expose d to eve rything from a plate of blood y eyeballs, to victims being bea ten rele ntlessly wi th t he various M edie val weap ons affixed on the house ’s walls (for exa mple, someone is axed in the stomach, followed by the s oaked ent rails oozing out!). Nasc hy’s mo st frequent 1980s leading lady, Juli a Saly, is not given much to do, but with her o ffbeat looks, is a n ice presence nonetheles s. The prominent fe male star here is Silvia Miró who is seen in the buff frequently, and she certainly ma kes f or s ome well-ap preciate d Euro starlet eye candy.
