Georg e Harvey Bo ne is a composer in early 20th ce ntury London, who is under s tress bec ause he is writing a piano concerto. Due to thi s str ess, he ge ts black outs when ever he he ars dissonances. Whe n he finds himself after the black out in a different q uarter of the town, he returns home, to r ead i n the pap er that somebody in t hat quarter was murdered. Asking he lp from a doctor at Scotla nd Yard he is assured that he has nothin g to do with it, but he is advised to cut b ack in hi s wor k and get so me relaxati on like other, ordinar y people. At a cheap musi cal he meets Netta, a sing er, w ho inspires him for a new motiv e for his c oncerto. But Netta discovers that this motive could also be use d as a song for her. The song gets sold, and she hangs aro und Geor ge to get more songs out of him. Georg e believe s that Netta is in love with him, a nd gets in an argument with his girlfri end Barb ara, the daughter of Lor d Henry, who wants t he concerto for one of his souares.
