Sixty Glorious Years is an exerc ise in the creatio n of iconography, both for Victor ia and it s star, Anna Neagle (who subsequentl y became known as 'Regal Ne agle'). Just as Eliza beth I commi ssioned artists to create flattering icon ic images fo r public consumption, so this film performs a simila r function, for Neagle i s more beautifu l than the real l ife Victoria. Controve rsial events (s uch as the ' Irish problem') are omitted and un pleasant aspects of Victoria's character (her petulance, arrogan ce, favouritism and 'right to privilege') are glossed over as endearing little 'whims'. Alber t acts as a moderating influence when she goes to o far. The film f ollowed a year after the hi ghly success ful Vict oria the Great (d. Herbert Wi lcox, 1937). Agai n th e screenplay is by Mile s Malleson and Robert Vansittart , and many of the suppor ting cast (the cream of acting talent of period ) repeat th eir roles, this time for the colour cameras. This was the first full length Technicolor film of cinematographer Fr eddie Young, who captures the spectacle o f royal weddings, grand balls and opulent interiors , with scenes actually filmed at royal palaces. Vivid battle scenes, set in Alexander Korda' s empir e territo ry (Sevastop ol and the Sudan ), rival those in The Four Fe athers (d. Zoltan Korda 1939). The tit le music sets th e tone a regal choir sings over a shot o f th e crown. El gar's 1901 'Pomp a nd Circumstance' march is he ard during th e diamon d jubile e celebrations and, as Vic toria 's coffin lies in state, the fi lm concludes with Anthony Collins' stately music accom panied by the text o f Rudyard Kipling's 'Lest we forget'. Com bined with the emotional appeal of scenes of Victoria connect ing wit h her 'ordi nary fol k', this is stirring stuff. The film conn ects with contemporary events of 1938. The releas e of two c elebratory royal films was intended to boost public affecti on for the m onarch y in the w ake of Edward VI II's abdication . Anglo-Germ an relations were another touchy subject . With ano ther war on the hori zon, influen tial voices w anted appeasement, and the f ilm could be se en to fit that ag enda. Victoria herself was of mainly German descent, n icknamed 'the grandm other of Europe', while Alb ert is a 'good German', charmingly playe d by Anton Walbrook as a cul tured, d ecent ma n. Sixt y Glorio us Years now see ms undul y formal and re verential. Had movi es exist ed durin g Victor ia's reign (they only emerged at the end) t his might have b een the kind of film produced. Unlike Mrs Brown (d. John Madden , 1997), it is all so very ' Victorian'. Roger Philip Mellor
