Based on an unknown Schönberg opera from 1929, From Toda y Until Tomorrow explores one night in a not- quite lov eles s marr iage. A husband an d wif e return from a party wh ere she h as flirted with another m an, wh ile h e has cast an appraising eye toward a n attractive, fashionably dressed acquaint ance of his wife’s. Though each dreams, brie fly, of leaving t he marriage for the excitem ent and m ystery of a new lov er, in the end they decide stability and comfort are more important than the fleeting thrill of new romance. Dire ctors Jea n-Marie Stra ub and Danièle Huillet, who previously coll aborated on two other films about mu sic (Th e Chronicle of Anna Magdalena Bach, 1968, and Moses an d Aaron, 1975), rely on long f ixed sh ots in auste re bl ack-and-white so that the focus remains on the musical brilliance o f Schön berg’ s atonal sco re, performed h ere by 70 musicians. That Schönberg would choo se such a relativel y lighthearted message for his newly discov ered musi cal lang uage remains a myst ery, especial ly sin ce the conclus ion reached by the husband and wif e—to st ick with the t ried and true—seems dir ectly at odds with Schönb erg’s own philosophy of composing. It is just th is juxtaposition , however, coupled with Straub and Huille t’s faithful presenta tion, that makes t he oper a a compelli ng addition to the S chönberg ca non—and the film such a challeng ing and in trigui ng experience.
