The m ain char acter is Dr. Max Holst, a successful neurosurgeon. One day an intense l ittle man name d Steinmetz sh ows up, who has the real ability to create object s out of thin air, using onl y his mind . As no one believes him at f irst, he is hel d at a ward for mental patients, b ut manif ests the key to his door a nd escapes. As he has a special interest in Dr. Holst , Steinmetz subsequen tly invites Holst to his large man sion, which is full of expensive paintings and sculp tures, an d prov es to him that he can in fact materialise objects. Steinmetz’s abilities are evolving b y leaps a nd bounds, and is progressin g from being able to create objec ts only to b eing able t o create living thi ngs. His ultimate ambit ion is to be able to create a human being. He tells Dr. Holst that if he will only pe rform a certain br ain op eration on him, Steinmetz wi ll become able to attain his goal. He’s got all the necessary equipment set u p in his basement. D r. Hol st, however , is too spooked by the whole thing to agree to this mad sc heme, and refuses. Steinmetz then s ets about manipulating Holst’s life, to pressure him into perform ing the op eration. B y then Steinmetz has be come able to cr eate a tem porary huma n being, and in the hope that he can perhaps m ake his own creation p erform th e operation, he manifests a doppelg anger of Dr. Hols t. This double proceeds to t ake over Dr. Holst’ s life, creating chaos for him professionally and personally. And then Dr . Holst starts fig hting back.
