(Not to overs tate it or anythi ng) A t hree hand er set in a post apocalyptic Oz outback (but one whi ch is wildly more fantastical than Mad Max), Spirits of the Air tells the story of Sm ith, a stranger on the run who h appens upon Felix and Betty, far into the desert. All arou nd them are amazing ima ges of c ars buried into the gro und like t otems, huge flags blowing madly in the desert wind and their h ouse itself is of the old oz pione er style b ut dec orated ever ywhere with crucifixes . Felix is an inve ntor obsessed with f light and making a glider, an obsession which has already left him in a w heel ch air. Betty is one of the truly gre at film characters, just an absolute tripper - I can't describe her but the perfor mance is a delight. This is not a fast film, it is not action packed but is in tense - t he imagery and ar t directio n are beautiful, the w riting is distinct and v ery Australian but still univers al, the soundtrack is haunting (a lot of windsound montages with a simple tune used to gre at effect) and the performances are bo th real and surre al. Unti l yo u see t his film (and for those who have en joyed the increas ingly brilliant work of Alex Proyas, you really should) you won't know what you are missing.
