C hall enge Jeremy attempts to build a car smaller th an the Peel P50 , naming his creation the P45. It was base d on a qu ad bike , with bodywork fitted, design ed to wrap around the driver. He then presented h is idea to t he 'Dragons' in a Dragons' Den style format. All of the drago ns declare themselves out and back in the studio, Richard concludes that for the P45 to b e put in productio n, Jeremy would have to be dead. 149Series 1 9, Episode 23 F ebruary 2013Mick Fleetwood Challenge, P art 1 In another cha llenge, the pres enters picked three super cars to take on an epic race. S ince it was Hammond's turn to select the c hallenge location, the team went to the Wester n United States. Jeremy sel ected the Lexus LFA, J ames c hose the new Ast on Martin Vanquish, and Richard took the SRT Vipe r. After a brief drive in the Nevad a desert, the tr io hea ded to Las Vegas M otor Speedway, specifically the drag strip , to compete in drag races organized by the Las Vegas P olice Department; whom organized it with the theory th at allowing people to drag race, legall y, at a c lose d circuit, would prevent str eet racing. Desp ite the hig h perfor mance of their c ars, the tri o were beaten by modi fied production car s, and 4WD cars , in e ach of their dr ag races. News Jeremy comes up with a solution on how to solve the crisis affecting Britain's town centre s sacking al l traf fic wardens and removing double yellow lines. T he trio then rev iew a Chinese pro duct designed to stop drowsiness behind the wheel, before they took a first look at the 2013 J aguar F-Type. They prais ed its styling, but criticized its hig h price tag of £ 60,000, as well as its ta rget audie nce. J ames mentions P eugeot Citroen's car int ende d to run on compressed air; Jerem y attempted to use a f ire extinguisher to demonst rate, but failed after only ca using himself to turn slowly around. After leav ing Las Vegas, Ja mes and Richard m ake fun of Jeremy's LFA for lacking not onl y Bluetooth connection a nd iPod connectors, but cup holders, des pite bei ng the most expensive car . They are then tasked to h ead to Will ow Sprin gs International Motors ports Park, but they inste ad s top on a grooved road, where each car drives over the grooves and pro duces notes . When they reach Wi llow Springs, th ey are f orced to pl ay an aerial version of Laser Quest, where they would drive 5 laps around the tr ack, whilst being chased by two Aerma cchi SF.260 arme d with laser guns. In the en d, James won the challen ge by b eing hit only 1 7 times. Star i n a Reason ably Pric ed Car Fle etwo od Mac's Mick Fleet wood drove t he Kia Cee'd around the Test Track with a lap of 145.4. Challenge, Part 3 Departing Wi llow Springs, the group headed for Los Angeles, California. In order to do real wor ld testing , Rich ard devised a challenge to see wh o co uld burn the best elevens. T he three ins tead ende d up drawing a p hallus and left LA. The team then stay ed for a nig ht in Palm Springs. However, the pr oducers gave them a final chal lenge. The three would dr ive from Palm Springs to the Mexican border at Calexico th e following morning, and the last to make it to the Mexican border wo uld have to travel into the country itself to drive the Mastretta MXT, a Mexican sports car mad e fun of by the pres enter s in an earlier series, for a late r segment on the show. In rev enge for taking them to Ameri ca, J eremy and James sabotaged Hammo nd's Viper, c ausing him to los e 10 minutes in t he race. D espite makin g a stop for fuel, Je remy made i t to the finis h line first , with James in second. Richard then walk ed to the border bein g the last person to a rrive. Challenge, Part 1 The produce rs have reserved a si ngle ticket to a football match at the San Siro in Milan, Northern Italy. Th e trio have a rac e fr om Wembley Stadium to the San Sir o. Jeremy dr ives the S helby Mustan g GT500 an d Richard an d James trav el on public transport. Similar to the pre vious race to Monte Carl o, Richard and James are no t allowed t o use any cars , and Jeremy is not allowed to use any trains. According to Jeremy, since th e last epi c race, the trains have be come faster and boa ts have become slo wer. Ric hard and James o pened up a b ig lead whilst trave lling on the Eur ostar, and arrive in Pa ris while Jeremy was stil l crossing the English Channel on a fe rry. After reaching France, Jeremy di scovers th at the Mustang only holds 50 litres in its fu el tank. Aft er leaving P aris, Richard a nd James discuss what to do upon ar rivin g in Milan — as th ere are two of them but only one tick et. Hundreds of miles behind, Jeremy ends part 1 of the challeng e stating ou t loud, I'm go nna los e! Star in a Reasona bly Pric ed Car Amy Macdonald drove the K ia Cee'd around the Test Track in 144.4. During one of her practice runs, Amy accidentally destroyed one of the runway lights, which Jeremy giv es to he r after reve aling the lap time. Challenge, Part 2 The high speed TGV sl owed down as it appro ached the mountains t hat surround Nort hern Italy. Jeremy began to catch up and was ne arly n eck and neck with the train, until road works at the Mont Blanc Tunnel slow him down. Th e train starts to accele rate a gain and re aches Northe rn It aly ahead of Jeremy. Richard and James use a t ube network to get to the streets near the fin ish line. J ames maintains hi s opposi tion to run o n telev ision and Richard runs off a lone to find the finish line, which is at a bar in t he IM V illa Veuve Cliequot . James then asse mbled a bik e which he h ad hidde n in one o f his bags and rid es to the bar, only to find that Ri chard is already t here and has won the race and the ticket to the football match. Moments later, Jeremy arri ved a nd accept ed de feat for the first time ever in an epic race of all the series. 1 51Series 19, Episode 417 February 2013Lewi s Hamilton Review Jeremy reviews the Va uxhall Astra VXR, Ford Focus ST and Renault Megane Renault Sport Cup. The Stig did l aps of each car, the Focus being the slowes t at 129.6, the As tra VXR at 128.3, and the Megane in 12 7.7. D espite this, Jeremy chose the Astra VXR as the b est overall car o f the three. News They discuss t he newest c ars, suc h as t he Alfa Ro meo 4C, the next g eneration Ford Mustang would be sold in Gre at B ritain, but the UK version would come with a 2.0 EcoBoost e ngine, and the impo rtance of t he handbrake turn in mal e develop ment. Revi ew Je remy tests the all n ew Kia Cee'd, putting it through a myriad of strange road tes ts. Incl uding Matt LeBlanc doing a lap with bo th the old and new Cee 'd, Bruce Wi llis (i n character as John McClan e) tes ting the horn of the Cee'd, Eric Clapton testing its auxiliary in put j ack, and Jer emy te sting the Cee'd's sel f parallel parking featur e. Review As punishment f or losing the previou s race, Ric hard is fo rced to review the Mastretta MX T in Mexico. Minding his words, he states that the MX T was an amb itious undertaking for the first-time manufac turer, but that it had its s hare of flaws. Jere my's team wi ns. 152Se ries 1 9, Episod e 524 Febru ary 2013Jam es McAvoy Challenge, Part 1 Jeremy and Ric hard attempt to design a car targeted at elderly peo ple. Jerem y de monstrates the complexity of moder n cars' dshboard. Ri chard brin gs a Fia t Mu ltipla and both modify it. Jere my breaks the dashb oard and replaces it considering it to be too complicated for elde rs. R ichard asks for the airbags saying tha t it is da ngerous for the eld erly who are as de licate as children, and th at he needs it for a safety feature. Jeremy makes a speedometer whi ch rea ds 20 mph at the top speed , he al so us es an old design swi tch for rear fog light which does n othing . Jeremy installs a pet- cage and replaces the back seat with h igh seat chairs a nd the Fiat badge with a Rover on e. They paint it in beige a fter obs ervi ng the shade of a hearing aid. Richard uses water-resistant fabri c as seat covers, and while stitching hurts his eye. They complete the car and end the part 1 wi th Ric hard wearing heavy bandages over his left eye. Ne ws Volkswagen will laun ch GTI version of the ne w Golf and GT version of Up wi ll be launched. Kia will launch th e Pro Cee'd GT. The Min i Paceman is la unched, and the trio mock th e front end of the car, claiming that it looks depr essing. Th e trio agree that the Br itish are the best driv ers. Alfa-R omeo releases photograp hs of the Gloria, in which the trio mak e fu n of it's name. Ric hard had arrived late so James and Jeremy had attemp ted to p lay tennis with cars (which has a lot of editing). Review James reviews the ne w Range Rove r in London. The n ew car is completely redesigned, 4 00 kg lighter due t o Aluminium body, h as active su spensi on, new gear box, minimalist dashboard and offers be tter comfort. James then races i t against TerraMax at Nevada Automotive Test Centr e, Neva da. The race was to a hill 10 mile across , passing through rocky terrain, hil lock, mud, river and sand-tracks. TerraMa x was switched to drone mode duri ng t he race to deflate the tyres a nd tak e a short-cu t. The Range Rov er's aut omatic Terrain Response System is demonstrated. James takes a longer route to ascend the hill but still wins the race. At th e studio, the t rio consider the driverless cars to be no t very practical. Star In A Reasonably Priced Car James Mc Avoy drove the Kia Cee'd ar ound the Test Track with a lap of 143.6 despite having less exp erience o f driving cars. H e drove ove r grassy pa tch in the last co rner but manage s to keep the car under cont rol. Challenge, Part 2 Jeremy and Richard road- test their car at Christchurch, Do rset. The car has large front bumpers made up of foam, la rge rear-view mirrors, s queaking ball und er the brake-pedal, lar ge m agnifying-glass on the das hboard, sat na v (voiced by Ric hard Brier s) with only four destinatons. The car has an art ificial cat on the roof which later fell over on the wa y of B ingo hall. Richard later shows his system to find the location of p arked car (the car activates a f lare and then re leases a balloon). Jeremy shows t hat the radio onl y plays Horse of the Year Sho w theme on a loop, which both later find to be irresi stible to clap along. The name of the car is revealed to be The James. They pick up th ree elderly ladie s fro m a pensioners' home f or road-test ing and dri ve them to a bow ling club where it is shown that Ri chard fitted the a irbag at t he rear for parking assist which i nflates the airbag on close proximit y. Jeremy a nd Ric hard bu y food fo r picnic, choosin g on ly British foods. They atta ch the s hopping trolley to Tow hitch and head for picnic. The roof of the car leaks as it r ains. Jeremy a nd Richard end up choosing a picnic spot o n roadside where they find the trolley to be damaged during reversing a nd t he food to be soaked, howeve r they ate the food which was not ruined. The next day both leave Chr istchur ch and Jeremy shows his syst em to preve nt the car fro m being driven on the wrong si de of the road, the car initially sounds alarm an d later the tyres, doors and other parts of the car explode which stops the car and r enders it immobile. At the studio, James c onsiders the heater to be complicated , the trio thank Richa rd Brie rs and announce t he Afric a special. 153S eries 19, Ep isode 63 M arch 2013 No Guest First of the two -episode Af rica Special, ta king p lace in Africa. T he e pisode was shot in 2 012. Challenge, Part 1 B uy used estate cars for up to £1,50 0 in Britain and report at a small village in rural Ug anda. Jere my arr ives in a BMW 528i Touring, Richard in a S ubaru Impre za WRX Estate and James in a Volvo 850R Wagon. Th e cha llenge is to find t he true source of th e river Nile. They set off an disc over that e xplorin g isn't as diff icult as first thought when they go o n a nice ea sy drive and find Lake V ictoria, of whom the Victorian Ex plorers thought was the source of the Nile. However they are then to ld that it is not the actu al source of the Nile and there were two other dispute d locations for it, one in Rwanda a nd one in Burun di. However, Jeremy Clar kson ins isted that both of these lo cations were wrong and decided to head west towards Lake Edward to see whether t here was a link between that lake and Lake Kivu in Rwanda. In their journey west, where they visit the Entebbe Airport a nd from there see the For d Scorpio Estate back-up car. They c ontinue into Kampala, Uganda's Capital City where the y get held u p in a traffic jam overn ight, the most h urrendous traffic they'd ever seen. They contin ue on well-maintained highways west f inding their trip incredi bly easy before reach ing the town of Mbarara in the southwest of t he country, via a stop in Jez za, a village in Mpigi District. Her e they stay in a disgusting hotel, aft er drivin g through tea p lant ations in an attempt to d isco ver a lovely te ahouse hotel, which in the mind of Richar d, was bound to foun d due to tea programmes he'd se en. In Mbarara they stayed in the Eco nomic Lodge with Jeremy having a bed with faeces on i t. They left the h otel disgust ed before Richar d has the idea to make the cars 'hotels'. James modi fies his Volvo by adding a l ibrary, Richard adds a cooker and Jeremy adds a coffin. The coffin he us es to put his clothes in, he sleeps on Egyptian Cotton. They le ave for Lake Edwar d, camping overnight there because of it s beau ty before heading in search of th e river heading for L ake Ki vu. None of the river s conne ct the la ke a s they al l head east rather t han south. The y give up , leaving them disap pointed. Then Jer emy looks at a ma p and discovers the sou rce of the Ni le must be on the other sid e of Lake V ictoria. His re asonin g is that the Mediterra nean Sea is effect ively an inland se a an d so Gibraltar is the t rue mou th of the Ni le, rather than Alexandria in Egypt. After discovering thi s they decide that they must driv e straig ht to the other si de of Lake Victoria to get to the southeast c oast in Tanzania near the Serengeti. They start this journey b y heading south into the R wenzori Mountain s, finding the g oing hard and most of the time getting their vehicles stuck in mud.
