The history of Danish country church archi tecture is told by showing sce nes of how the chur ch was u sed by the cong regati on, begin ning w ith the celebrati on o f mass in a small and simple wood en church 800 years ago, and en ding with the congrega tion singing in a village chur ch of to-day. The develo pment and the growth of the p attern of c hurch architectur e is shown. Dreyer in this film shows a series of church es from diff erent periods w ith churchgoers in peri od clothing. Each period is separated by a shot of a church bell double- exposed on the sky. Although the film has a vibrant and instructive way of communic ating the different e pochs and styles to students, it does n ot exhibit the ar tistic quality tha t usually distinguishes a Dre yer fil m, except perhaps in some of the costumes, which were originally made for Day of Wrath. The board of Dansk K ultu rfilm in autumn 1945 decided that their planned church film would exclusively be about villag e churc hes. Dreyer would rework the script that was w ritte n by editor and folk high-scho ol principal Bernhard Jensen, a ided by a committee of experts co nsis ting of architect H. Lønborg-Jense n and Victor Hermansen, cur ator a t the National Museum o f Denma rk. Dreyer had a first draf t rea dy in mid- March, entitled Kirken er et gammelt Hus (The Churc h Is an Old House), whic h was distributed to the memb ers of the comm ittee for their comments. In the last half of July, Dr eyer and Victor Hermansen t ravell ed the country to look at s uitable churches. They researched t he details and at Dreyer ’s req uest a number of technica l changes we re made to the churches, including the removal o f porcelain holders for electrical wiring in Tveje Merløse Church. On 4 July, Drey er went in advance t o Ri ngkøbin g. Shooting was set to start a few days later with the arri val of the dire ctor of photograph y, Preben Frank, who had fal len off a lad der and broken his leg, Fortunately, he was r eady to cautiou sly start wo rking again wi thin a few days, with hi s leg i n a cast. Otherwise, the production went without a glit ch. E verywhere , Dreyer said, they were w ell received at the vicara ges and they had no problem getting en ough extras. On 1 august, they returne d to Copenhagen with almost all t heir footage in the can. They only needed to film the church in S kelby, where the weath er had been against them, plus a Swedish w ooden church in Hedared. Th e econom y was distressed s o so on after the war , especi ally when it came to for eign curr ency, but there were no real wooden churches left in Denmark and bui lding an in terior set in th e studio would be t oo expensive. Th e fin ished film was shown for the first t ime on 24 September 1947 to a sma ll, c losed circle, which includ ed the Mi nist er f or Ecclesiastica l Affairs. In December 1947, a s was Dans k Kulturfilm’s standa rd practic e, the film was presented t o the press, politicians and others on a programme w ith four o ther short f ilms

“因为都是未~~成~~年，基本是要从宽处理，但是 架不住我们这些家长 的强烈要 求，警方就做了一个拘留的处罚，有一个被戚尧 打伤，哭哭啼啼的，后来对方家长来了，非要我们赔偿，我 不肯，僵持 不下，警方就把受伤的 小孩子放回去了。”
