Eric Braede n stars as Dr. Charles Forbin, who has created a supercomputer named Colossu s, built solely for th e pur pose of controllin g the nuclear def enses of t he Western allia nce. It isn't too lo ng after, however, that the Russian s anno unce that they too h ave bui lt a simila r co mputer f or those sam e pu rposes on their side--Guardian. An d wh en the two machines begi n shari ng information at a spe ed nobody can believe, an attemp t is made t o disable th em. This unfortunatel y just raises the machines' ire; and in retaliation, they launc h their weap ons a t each other 's home nations. The result is a chilling scenario that is po tential ly becomin g all too real these days. COLOSSUS THE FORBIN PROJECT was not a big hit at the box offic e for vario us reasons. One is that its cast wasn't exactly well known. A nother reason is that its ending isn't exact ly a happy one. Sti ll a third reason is that Universal had tr oubl e trying to promote it in the wake of the hu ge s uccess of St anley Kubrick's 2001 A SPACE ODYSSEY. The latte r reason is obvious Colossus and Guardian, like HAL in the Kubrick mo vie, b ecome centra l chara cters h ere. The dif ference he re is that while HAL m alfunction s due to a p rogramming c onflict, Colossus and Guard ian remai n all too stable, convinced b eyond a doubt that they know ho w to protect Mank ind better than Man h imself. As the computers point out One in evit able r ule is that Ma nkind is his own worst enemy. Joseph Sargent's direction is effic ient, and th e special effects work of Albert Wh itlock still manages to work despite its obvious age. An overlooke d gem in th e sc i-fi genre, this should be given a revival.
