Set in an un derground dungeon inhab ited by bund led, ra gged h uman beings, after the nuclear holocaust. T he story fo llows the wanderings o f a hero th rough the s ituatio ns of survival. Peopl e wait for the Ark to arrive and rescue them while their ha bitat falls apar t. Delving deep in to the dus ty and long abandonded vaults of b-cinema in searc h of lost gems a lways lea ves me with a bittersweet taste. On one h and the discovery of unexpected gems where no o ne wo uld think th em possible is a rewarding exp erience. On the othe r hand thou gh it m akes one wonder how many of these rem arkable low- budget odd ities, p ersonal love af fairs of directors never qu ite famous and n ow all but forgo tten, have almo st forever s lipped from memory n any ca se what we have here is a litt le post -apocalyptic gem from Poland that is really better t han it has any right to. The dystopi an near future of O-BI, O-BA finds a gr oup of s urvivors of the nuclear war that ravaged the Ea rth inhab itin g an underworld concrete bunker and biding t heir time as they wait for t he myst erio us Ark, an air ship of some kind that wi ll come and save them. T he Ar k proves to be an elaborate h oax, care full y designed to give hope to t he malnourished and desperate denizens of the bunker, while i n th e me antime the dom e that separates their mis erable ex istence from the nuclear win ter outsid e is slowly caving in. What first striked me about the movie is the design of the b unker and the de piction of the survivors. The su rvivors are gaunt, filthy and terrible-looking penitents, dressed in rags and aimles sly wand ering the ne on-lit halls of the bunker like automatons. The bun ker is a run down , seedy place, with bright neon lights peering from al l sides like the eyes of malignant beasts . On one hand it is a sl ightly 80's depi ction of the dystopian future bu t the mov ie n ever stoo ps down to MAD MAX chees e. In stead it combines bit ing po litical satire wi th the bleak outlook of a w orld with no future, bla ck come dy with barbs on apath y, religion and powe r. The survivors, for example, are fed some kin d of flour dr oppin g from a tube th at hovers in the air - later on we disc over the food supervi sor uses boo ks and the Bible itself as filler f or this meagre meal. Th ere are many s uch short s ymbolic touches, perhaps not life-chan ging or f aith-restoring, yet playf ul, clever and inspired. One thing is for sure; O- BI, O-BA is not your run-of-the-mill sci-fi schloc k. It overcomes its mod est budget with creati vity and has genuine artistic aspira tions both from a writing and directing perspective. My opini on is th at it should h ave been f ilmed in blac k and white inste ad of colour th ough. Th e director uses atmospheric li ght and shad ow to great effect and i t would have registered even better in stark black and white. The b lue-green neon on the other hand out stays it s welcome after a while. Just a min or gripe in an otherwise solid b-mo vie with its heart set in all the righ t places. Imagine a less ble ak THE ROAD (Cormac McCarthy) being i njected with the satire and h umour of DR.STRANGELOVE and yo u're getting there. See it if y ou can find it.
