When he is offered an undercov er job by Geral d Carver he accepts and b egins to build a relationship with D avid Jason in order to get t o the main dealer s. However a s he is forced to deal drugs and kill to keep his cover he finds the l ines between cop and crimi nal being lost – is he a cop pretending to be a dealer or a dealer pr etend ing to be a cop L arry (as he was then) Fishbu rne's first lead role was a typ icall y dark vehicle. The story i s the usu al one o f cop los ing himself whe n undercover, however it manages to be more tha n that for m ost of the time. Co-written by Tolkin, who wrote Th e Player, this natur ally has a nice cynical edge to it wh en it looks at the U S's hyp ocritical approach to drug control and the pol itical links between the st reet hustlers and the political high rollers who court respectability. The stor y does eventually settle int o a traditi onal setting but eve n then it works well as a thri ller. The m ulti- talented Bil l Duke direc ts well wi th a gritty feel and a few nice touches. However sev eral thing s are a bit iffy. For mos t of the fi lm Fishburne's narrationvoice over is a bit like a c ross between Apoc alypse Now and Bla de Runner – it comes across as a little too dark and heavy an d also explains thi ngs like we can't figure it out ourselves. Howeve r once you get into th e film it's not as big a deal. My m ain problem lies with the characters. Fi shbur ne is excell ent, a r eal model of underlying an ger and violen ce, Goldblum is good but perhaps a little OTT on the yuppievio lence thing, but there's good support fro m Smi th and Spin Cit y's beautiful (and often underused – but not here) Victor ia Dillard. However the two main white character s (Goldbl um and Smith) are bot h smeared with rac ist in sinuations – Smith ap pears to insult hi s black officers a nd does n't care about the j unki es, while G oldbl um is fascinated about all thi ngs black a nd t alks about them as wil d beautiful beas ts and loves having sex with black'. These t hings aren't a major p roblem, but with basically only two w hite c haracters i n it, it's a little worrying tha t bot h are give n that edge. However these are min or compl aints t hat get lost with a good thriller. Fishburne excels and Duke deliver s a story th at is a good thrill er but also has a jaded, subversive edge
