Post-nuclear-war d ramas centering on a small group of survivors now constitute an entire g enre in science-fiction f ilms. All of them, in some way or another, can be t raced back to this s eminal film from 1951 in w hich five people dea l with the possibility they are the only human beings left alive on the planet. While most of the la ter movies explo ited this possi bility for B-movie thrills, Five adopt s a quiet, contemplat ive tone which some m ay find dull but whic h thoughtful view ers are more likely to find , for wan t of a better word, h aunting. There is som ething about this movie which ge ts under the skin an d which lurks in the corners of t he mind long af ter it's over.
