“San gen Om De n Eldröda Blomman” ( “S ong Of The Scarlet Flower” ) was a recent an d remarkable silent surp rise for this Herr Von; th e oeu vre is an excellent Herr Stiller si lent film that t his German count watched in a newly resto red and tinted copy. It c ombines the wel l-known aesthe tics, technical improvements a nd artistic merits for which the N ordic direct or was known and praised since those early silent times till toda y. The film tells of the merry and carefre e love life of yo ung Olof ( Herr Lars Ha nson ) a woodsman who during his search for true love, seduces man y frauleins ( just like this German a ristocrat… w ell, not exactly because the purpo se o f this Herr Vo n’s seducti on of rich fräulein heir esses a re their great fortunes… ). He wi ll su ffer disappointment and deceptio n, all thos e problem s that turn up in any loving relationshi p. Finally he w ill find respons ibility and maturity, learning during his particula r quest that his a ctions alway s have consequences in d ifferent degrees to th e people around him. This Herr Von can describe “Sangen Om…” as a kind o f coming of age film, the spe cial intros pective gro wth toward maturit y of a free and easy youngster. As this German co unt said be fore , the film display s St iller ’s characteristic artisti c virtues. ; in the first part of the film , we can see elements of comed y, not e xactly like the comedy of int rigues in o ther Stiller films, b ut humor of a more cheer ful sort, highlighting the self-i nvolvement o f our hero. Olof ‘s fri volo us flirta tions with the differ ent girls eve ntually tur n romantic and then turn into drama. There is co nflict in the troubled relationship between Olof and his father and lat er with the father of his beloved . The beautiful and wild natura l la ndscapes of N orrland and nort hern Sw eden len d the tale a cert ain pow er and i s character istic of Herr Stiller’s other silent s where Nature emerge s as an imp ortant character in the story. This is s trongly refl ected throughout the fi lm but es pecially during the frantic sce ne wherei n Olof descends into the troubled wa ters of a ri ver, a beautiful metaphor for the hardships that our hero has to endure until he finds himself. “Sangen Om Den Eldröda Blomman” is an e xcellent, b eautiful film, a solid, technica lly perfect and intricate product ion of 1919 that demon strates once again th e importance of Herr Stiller for silent film history.
