New Yor k private detective Duncan Mac MacLai n is blind but has ke enly dev eloped all his other sense s. He pursue s his work as sisted by his f aithful guide dog Friday, his butle r, Alistair, and his assistant, Marty. Reti red act ress No rma La wry, an old fri end, comes t o Mac seeking advice. Her head strong 17-year-old step-daug hter Barbara, herself a promising actress, is enamored with h er l eading man in a small the ater pr oduction, the much older Lothario Paul Gerente. Paul, who had once been Norma's lover, has conv inced Barba ra that Norma act ually wants Pau l for herself and has only married her father S tephen for his money . At Mac's urging, Nor ma tried to reason with Paul, but he insists that he loves Barba ra and l aughs her off. Barb ara is equal ly disdainf ul of her and agrees to meet Paul for di nner that nigh t at his apartment. Norma 's husband Stephe n Law ry is a scientist leaving t hat night on a trip to test a secret i nvention on whic h he has b een w orking for the go vernment and the war effort. Worried about Barbara, she uses a p retext not to acco mpany Stephen and goes to the apartm ent. When Barbara arrives, she finds Paul's dead body and thinks that Norma has killed him, even though Norma insists that he was dead when she arrived. Bar bara threatens t o call the polic e unless she lea ves St ephen. Fearing that a scandal will hurt him, Norma agrees. Norma then turns to Mac, who goes to Paul' s apartment with Friday and Marty, onl y to find the body and the rug under it missing. A man arri ves to replace the rug and Mac hides in a closet, overhearing a telephone call to Norma's numb er from Gabriel to Vera. M ac acciden tally gives himself away, but with Frid ay's help ov erpowers Gabriel, who refuses to talk. Mac has Marty hide him to keep him under wra ps. Norma returns to her country home unex pectedly, whic h discour ages an esp ionage ring tha t inc ludes he r bu tler, Hansen, fr om b reaking i nto Stephe n's safe and stealing his plans. They hav e killed Gerente, who was also an agent, and hidden t he bo dy. Mac arrives with Friday at Nor ma's hous e and p retends to be her curmudgeonly Uncle Mac w ho has come for a visit. His bl indness lulls any suspicions Hansen might have abou t him. Short ly thereafter, Barbara comes home from an emergen cy rehearsal, calle d to get h er out of the house by her di rector, Cheli Scott, who inveigles an invitation t o spend the ni ght at the Lawry home. Unknown to Barbar a and Norma, Ch eli is t he ringlea der of the spies . Cheli o rdered Paul killed because his affec tion for Barbara was beginni ng to lim it his effective ness, and she immediately suspects Mac is not what he seems. Gabriel's wif e Vera, the Lawrys' ma id, is also a part of the plot. When Gabriel does not return home, Vera b ecomes hysterical wit h worry. Mac se cret ly ask s Vera to meet him in the green house , using her worr y about Gabriel a s a lure. Sh e is observed by the othe rs, however, an d is killed by Hansen before she can reach Mac . The spies cut the hou se's telephone w ires so that Mac and No rma cannot call the police, an d Che li h as Mac l ocked up under guard. Using his blindn ess as a distraction, Mac o verpo wers his guard and releases Fri day out a window with instr uctions to go home and get Mar ty. Stephe n arr ives h ome and Chel i threatens his family if he does n ot give her the final step in creating his inv entio n, which was not in the safe. Barbara fi nally realizes how much Norma act ually cares for h er. Mac trie s to stall f or time, but is locked in the cellar. When Han sen goes to kil l him, Mac has broken the light bulb and hi s advantage of total darkness helps him over come the spy. Marty and Friday r eturn with the pol ice. When Friday is spotted by a lookout, Mac overpowers him and is saved from being shot by anoth er look out by Friday. After the spies are captured, Stephen and Norma are off to Washin gton, D.C., w ith Barbara remai ning behind to car e for her n ew Uncle Mac.
